Intiman's "reimagined" revival of The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful brings audiences endless bouts of laughter meshed with mystery. Set in Victorian England and the tombs of Egypt, it's centered on an estate that's haunted by a mistress who has allegedly passed away.
Actors Helen Roundhill and Jesse Calixto bring this play to life through the eight characters they portray – not to mention the 35 costume changes they undergo in "blink or you may miss it" moments.
During the comedy – which runs until Feb. 26 at the theatre's new home at Seattle Central College, and is the company's first production since August of 2019 – the actors move across the entire stage on all levels, and interact with all portions of the set, including flowers, novels, booze, and a portrait of the late Irma Vep. Themes of werewolves, mummies, and more surface throughout the performance, and sound and lighting effects that portray a thunderstorm add a little eeriness.
For the act set in Egypt, director Jasmine Joshua was able to adjust the script to remove derogatory language. The journey through that country, at the far front of the stage, is sprinkled with camp comedy, such as when a female mummy is found in a tomb wearing titty tassels and Edgar, the lord of the British estate, says, "Let us disrobe this young beauty over 3,000 years old."
At the end of that act, to represent the long travels from country to country, a large projector screen drops from the ceiling, and a compilation of classic films such as Spaceballs, Jaws, Forrest Gump, Lord of the Rings, and others begins to play. Several Star Wars references are added, including the classic Princess Leia in braided buns.
If the humor wasn't enough, Roundhill and Calixto both pop out guitars and ukuleles numerous times to provide the audience with live music, Calixto's fingerpicking on the guitar filling the hall, to the sustained delight of the audience.
If there's one thing you should do this February, it's attend the live performance of Intiman's The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful. The way in which Roundhill and Calixto, under the Joshua's direction, bring this tale to life is unlike any other, and it will leave you wanting to watch the performance all over again.
