A member of our SGN team has passed away. This week, the SGN pays tribute to Ken Campbell. He was 50 years old.

Ken was an artistic soul, channeling his creative talents in a variety of different media: illustration, graphic design, sculpture, jewelry design, and poetry.�Ken was the resident cartoonist at the paper for many years, starting in 2013. He provided the paper with original weekly comics in collaboration with longtime Editor-in-Chief George Bakan.

On many late nights while the SGN team was scrambling to get to print, Ken would deliver a fresh pizza from Hot Mama's to feed them (half mushroom & onion, half pineapple, extra cheese) and George and Ken would pitch ideas for the week's comic focus.

George was keenly proud of Ken's tribute to the Orlando nightclub massacre in 2016, which was a shocking double-truck centerfold, illustrated with 49 coffins�representing the lives lost�—�each draped in a rainbow Pride flag�—�upon streams of the blood that was shed that night. The dark poeticism and powerful in-your-face imagery was in the spirit of the paper to never let LGBTQ+ issues go unnoticed and to give voice to a community that so often is not heard. It was his most lasting work for the paper, and has been reprinted every year since.

We will never forget him. We take comfort in knowing that Ken's contributions to the SGN will live on forever in our archives. May he rest in peace.
