Trans Day of Remembrance events to memorialize Trans lives lost

Share this Post:

Each year, Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) events take place in Seattle and surrounding areas to memorialize the lives lost during the past year due to anti-Transgender violence. The Human Rights Campaign, which tracks these murders and releases annual reports, found that 30 Transgender lives were lost in 2024 alone.

BIPOC Transgender women are disproportionately impacted by acts of harm, and this year two Washington women were murdered: Reyna Hernandez and Kenji Spurgeon.

The SGN previously reported on the murder of Hernandez, a 54-year-old Latina Transgender woman who was found shot and killed in Renton in February and found dead in a cemetery in Mexico with her hands and feet bound. Spurgeon, a 23-year-old Black Transgender woman, was killed by a gunshot on Capitol Hill on July 1. Seattle Police Department investigators have yet to locate the suspect, as previously reported by the SGN.

To honor and pay respects to our vibrant Transgender community in Washington, the SGN has put together a list of TDOR events for readers to participate in on November 20.

• The Seattle Trans and Nonbinary Choral Ensemble has a concert performance from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the University Congregational UCC, located in the U District. The evening will consist of music and poetry, and will feature the artist Lotus the Vibe.

• UTOPIA WA is also hosting its annual TDOR observance at Green River College, which will be an all-day event.

• The East Shore Unitarian Church in Bellevue will host a vigil from 7 to 8 p.m. that will include prayers, music, candle lighting, and a reading of the names of Transgender lives lost this year.
