Les Samedis De La Danse
Next Stage Dance Theatre
Fremont Dance
December 3
By the time you read this, Mercury, that little rapscallion of the astrological pantheon, who controls everything to do with communication, will be fully direct and things will probably be going smoothly. But last weekend, possibly influenced by our little messenger, I was much later than I hoped to be in seeing the works in progress at Dance Fremont, put on by Next Stage Dance Theatre. I'm happy to say that not only were they gracious about it, but I still got to see some very exciting performances.
There was the first piece-which myself and two other audience members were part of-that involved us directing the dancers in their movements. Telling them when to 'start' and 'stop' in the flow of their dances. This piece, called 'The Hearing' was fresh, daring and one I'd like to see turned into a longer piece in the near future.
I also liked the two pieces, 'Modern Gesticulations', and 'Fool's Mate', which involved two dancers reading from a text by dancer Bridget Thompson, using the contexts of bridge and chess as a 'language' between two people trying to begin a relationship. Funny and at times, provocative, this piece tickled me and made me glad I'd come all the way across town on a freezing night, as did the final piece, 'La Valse', which was just so beautiful and sensuous that it was like watching artwork being performed with two bodies. And if you missed this show, Next Stage will again be performing longer works on January 14th, March 24th and 25th (these will be at Broadway Performance Hall) next year. Oh, and you can donate to Next Stage Dance, so they can continue to build on their works. Go to http://www.NextStageDance.org for more information.
