Vice presidential debate, the fourth nationally televised forum of the general election, fails to include LGBTQ issues

(October 8, 2020) - In the vice presidential debate in Salt Lake City, no LGBTQ-specific issues were raised to the candidates, Sen. Kamala Harris and Vice President Mike Pence. It's the fourth straight nationally televised forum of the general election to fail to include LGBTQ issues.

Vice President Pence has yet to be directly asked about his role in the Trump administration's record of anti-LGBTQ policy and rhetoric, 181 attacks and counting since the day Donald Trump and [he] took office, as tracked by GLAAD's Trump Accountability Project. GLAAD also tracks Pence's history of anti-LGBTQ policy and rhetoric at

GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis responded to the debate, here and on Twitter:

"This is the fourth missed chance in a nationally televised forum of the general election to address any LGBTQ issues. VP Pence should have been called to account for his role in the administration's 181 attacks against the LGBTQ community. LGBTQ voters may cast the deciding votes in this election, and we need to be a part of the conversation. The moderators must include us. The candidates must acknowledge us. LGBTQ people deserve to know where the candidates stand on issues of life and death to us. We will continue to demand to be seen and heard."

GLAAD monitored and live-tweeted the debate, noting the lack of LGBTQ questions and that an insect lingering on Vice President Pence's head got more attention: "Unfortunately, a fly got more air time during the VP Debate than LGBTQ issues did," GLAAD tweeted.

GLAAD has been reaching out to debate and town hall moderators to offer resources and data about where LGBTQ voters stand and the issues important to the community.

We will be monitoring the next debate, scheduled between President Trump and former Vice President Biden on October 15th.

GLAAD rewrites the script for LGBTQ acceptance. As a dynamic media force, GLAAD tackles tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. GLAAD protects all that has been accomplished and creates a world where everyone can live the life they love.
