Anal-sex bishop in trouble with the law

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Greek Orthodox bishop Neophytos Masouras, who made headlines earlier this summer with his claim that people become Gay people because their mothers had anal sex, is in trouble with the law.

Cyprus, the country where the bishop holds office, is a member of the EU and therefore has laws on the books prohibiting hate speech and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Police in Cyprus are now working with the country's attorney general to determine whether Neophytos's comments could be classified as hate speech.

Several Cypriot government officials have called out the bishop's remarks for being 'insulting' and 'injurious.'

In July, the bishop attended a public event where he shared his theory about how people become Gay.'It follows an unnatural sexual act between the parents,' Neophytos said. 'To be more clear, anal sex.'

He went on to say that 'when the woman enjoys that, a desire is created, and then the desire is passed on to the child.'

The bishop was - of course - widely mocked for his little talk. Things only got worse for him when he apparently forged a letter of support from 38 international academics.

The letter appeared on the church's website shortly after the bishop's speech and was signed by professors in fields ranging from dentistry to economics at universities in Greece, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, and the United States.

' The Bishop of Morphou gave a possible scientific explanation of homosexuality without offending individuals,' the letter stated. 'For the church, all individuals are pictures of Christ therefore holy and beloved. Sin, however, is not acceptable because it destroys a person.'

One of the supposed signatories, music professor Alexandros Kapsokavadis, said he never signed the letter and has no idea how his name ended up on it in the first place.

In a Facebook post, Kapsokavadis wrote: 'What business do I have to publicly express my opinion over matters of the church? What would the church care for my opinion anyway? Since when would I 'support' a man that I haven't even heard of!'

Neophytos is bishop of Morphou, Cyprus, a town now under the control of Turkish occupation forces, meaning he has no particular spiritual or administrative responsibilities - and clearly has too much time on his hands.
