Sovereign: A Black Queer One-Womyn Show Festival Jan. 7 & 9-12

SOVEREIGN:
A BLACK QUEER
ONE-WOMYN SHOW
FESTIVAL
18TH & UNION ART SPACE
January 7 & 9-12

Earth Pearl Collective presents their second annual black queer one-womyn show festival, Sovereign, at 18th & Union Art Space (18th Ave. & E Union St.) January 9-12. There will be three different programs rotating throughout the festival with an opportunity to view all shows back-to-back Saturday, January 12.

This year's lineup features D.C.-based poet and vocalist, Patience Sings, from the peace and body-roll duo BOOM-scat. Her soulful tones will introduce you to the beauty of grief in her solo Seattle debut of 'Good Grief.' Local favorites will include Gregory Award Winner for Best Actress in a play, Aishe` Keita, with her new one womyn show 'Griot,' which opens the festival on Wednesday January 9 at 7:30pm. Aviona Rodriguez Brown is also premiering a brand new work celebrating and dissecting the intersections of being a 'mixed race' Afro-Latina in her autobiographical piece, 'Aviona.' Naa Akua, began warming hearts in the theatre scene in their debut performance in 'Welcome to Braggsville' with Book-It Theatre, and is now combining their sound healing work with their art in 'Akwaaba.' A city-wide sweetheart, Briq House, the mastermind behind the all POC burlesque show, 'Sunday Night Suga Shaq' has teased us all, and in her new full length solo performance, 'Lessons from the Pulpit,' she lets us know how it all began.

Join the cast and crew for a special preview party and panel discussion on Monday night January 7 at 8:00pm to get a snippet of what the shows are about and get the inside scoop on how and why they were created. Then, there will be refreshments and dancing.

For more information on the individual shows, festival passes, and Earth Pearl Collective, please visit www.earthpearlcollective.com. Individual tickets are $15, $20 & $25. Passes are Choose Your Own Price Plan: $30, $45 & $60

This project is a supported in part by 18th & Union Arts Space and The Hansberry Project.
