Trans* Day of Remembrance commemorated at Seattle Central College

November 20th is Trans* Day of Remembrance (TDOR), a day which members and allies of the LGBTQ community use to honor the lives of trans* people killed simply because they were trans*. This year, Seattle Central College student Astro Pittman organized and hosted an event on site at SCC. Pittman, who is also editor-in-chief of the SCC student newspaper The Seattle Collegian, spoke at length about the history of TDOR and the disproportionate rates of violence experienced by trans* people, and especially trans* women of color, and the other societal obstacles trans* people can face, including but by no means limited to high rates of houselessness, mental disorders and suicide, and limited employment opportunities.

Pittman invited Officer James Ritter of the SPD to speak as well; Ritter works in the Community Outreach Section and is the SPD liaison to LGBTQ community; he travels the country educating other police departments on policies and procedures for interacting with trans* identified individuals. He's also an out gay man who has served 38 years on the force. Officer Ritter spoke about his personal growth learning more about the trans* individuals as well as his hopes to make further progress within the bureau and to create stronger ties with the community-at-large.

The end of the evening was marked with the entire audience writing the names of trans* people from around the world who had been killed this year on white paper wish lamps, which were then taken outside and lit.

Members from the two Seattle chapters of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were in attendance to provide an appropriate air of pomp and ceremony.
