Federal court OKs Houston libraries' Drag Queen Story Hour

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

A US district judge in Houston has tossed out a lawsuit challenging the city libraries' popular Drag Queen Story Hour. The program features drag queens reading stories to local children.

The suit was filed by four Houston residents who claimed that the program violated their First Amendment freedom of religion.

'That's outrageous that we've come to a point where we're saying it's OK for our taxpayer dollars to be used for a drag queen to come in and indoctrinate our young kids. These are kids that are three to ten years of age,' James Woodfill, one of the plaintiffs, said.

'Hundreds of thousands of pieces of mail are going out all over Harris County letting people know exactly what is happening with a Democrat-controlled government.'

Woodfill claims to have a $500,000 budget to spend on mailers and television ads denouncing the program.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner pointed out that no tax dollars are being used on the program, however.

'It is being housed at one or two libraries, requested by the patrons of those libraries. There are no city tax dollars. It's a voluntary program. It's not costing people anything,' Turner said.

US District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal dismissed the suit less than four days after it was filed.

'There is no basis to support the requested relief,' she wrote in a four-sentence ruling. 'The application is denied.'
