IN MEMORIAM: Arthur Mitchell (1934-2018)

by Sharon Cumberland - SGN A&E Writer

Arthur Mitchell, the first black dancer to penetrate the aristocratic, all-white world of classical ballet, has died at the age of 84.

He grew up in Harlem, supported his family from the age of 12, and attended the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan. He was accepted into the New York City Ballet School and was mentored by the great Russian choreographer, George Balanchine, who created works especially for him. Balanchine threatened to withdraw New York City Ballet from any venue that objected to having a black man dance with white women.

Mitchell was a principal dancer with NYCB for fifteen years. After the assassination of Martin Luther King, Mitchell left the company to found the Dance Theatre of Harlem in order to introduce black children to classical dance, and to give them a chance to follow in his footsteps. -'I want to change the world,-' he said, -'and particularly for African Americans and in classical ballet ... I was the first, so it's a responsibility on your shoulder.-'

Arthur Mitchell never married and had no children. The Internet and literature written about him are silent on the possible intersectionalities of his life beyond race and ballet. His private life was very private. But as all educators know, people who teach well and open doors to young people are parents many times over. Arthur Mitchell had thousands and thousands of children.

To see one of the most iconic works Balanchine made for Mitchell, -'AGON Pas de Deux,-' enter that title on YouTube and look at the original cast. Mitchell dances with the beautiful Diana Adams, whose black leotard and white skin contrast with Mitchell's black tights, white shirt, and black skin to create a checkerboard that morphs continually into different configurations. The geometry created with their bodies is the essence of modern ballet - and a vision of racial harmony.

Mitchell once said that -'The arts ignite the mind. They give you the possibility to dream and to hope.-' He brought that hope to thousands of people - those who love ballet, those who never imagined black people could be ballet dancers, and those who had a mentor who led them into a large, international world of discipline and beauty.
