First openly LGBTQ U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin to face anti-LGBTQ challenger Leah Vukmir in U.S. Senate race

WASHINGTON, DC - [On August 14] Republican primary voters chose Wisconsin State Sen. Leah Vukmir to challenge incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin for her US Senate seat - setting up a general election battle between an anti-LGBTQ extremist and the first openly LGBTQ US senator in American history. For almost two decades, Vukmir has voted against pro-LGBTQ legislation and remains opposed to marriage equality and protections for LGBTQ youth. The Wisconsin race is one of the most competitive Senate races in the nation this cycle.

'Wisconsin voters will have a stark choice come November - re-elect Sen. Tammy Baldwin, the first openly LGBTQ US senator, or elect an extremist anti-LGBTQ politician who prides herself on the divisiveness that makes Congress so unpopular,' said Mayor Annise Parker, president and CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund. 'Leah Vukmir built her career on opposing basic equality for LGBTQ Americans and considers designated hate groups among her closest supporters. Wisconsin voters have a proud history of electing and re-electing groundbreaking LGBTQ candidates like Sen. Baldwin, and we are confident they will reject Vukmir's hostile agenda come November.

'Sen. Baldwin's re-election is considered critical to building a pro-equality majority in the US Senate next year - but more importantly it is about who is on the side of average Wisconsinites. Leah Vukmir not only opposes equality for all Americans, she continues to put her corporate special interests ahead of the hard-working Wisconsin families Sen. Baldwin champions. The choice is clear for voters come November.'

The LGBTQ Victory Fund works to change the face and voice of America's politics and achieve equality for LGBTQ Americans by increasing the number of openly LGBTQ elected officials at all levels of government. victoryfund.org
