NAACP statement on Supreme Court decision in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission

BALTIMORE - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the nation's premier civil rights organization, released the following statement on the Masterpiece Cakeshop Supreme Court ruling:

'The US Supreme Court yesterday characterized as 'unexceptional' the principle that state law 'can protect gay persons, just as it can protect other classes of individuals, in acquiring whatever products and services they choose on the same terms and conditions as are offered to other members of the public.' While perhaps unexceptional as a statement of law, it is also true that gays and lesbians remain subject to discrimination in public accommodations in communities large and small across this country. The fact that Masterpiece Cakeshop was permitted in this instance to refuse service to a same-sex couple simply because they are a same-sex couple demonstrates how far we have yet to go. The NAACP will not rest until each person is treated equally under the law, regardless of race, national origin, gender identity, or sexual orientation. That is our charge, and we are committed to the fight.'

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities. You can read more about the NAACP's work and our six 'Game Changer' issue areas at http://www.naacp.org/about-us/game-changers.
