Rufus Wainwright to appear in special engagement at ECA, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis joining Ciara at Benaroya Hall for student arts concert

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Rufus Wainwright is scheduled to appear May 16 at the Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA) in what's being billed as a special engagement. The Grammy-nominated LGBT artist hasn't played in the city for several years, the closest was a year ago in Olympia when he gave a special performance to raise funds for Pizza Klatch, an organization that supports Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer youth (LGBTQ) and allies to prevent teen suicide, reduce bullying and keep youth in school. Wainwright's upcoming concert isn't a fundraiser and it isn't clear if his set list will be a collection of music from his twenty-year career, or if it will concentrate on a certain recording, such as he did in 2009 when he introduced fans at the Paramount Theatre to songs from his acclaimed first opera Prima Donna; his untitled second opera, centered around Roman Emperor Hadrian, has already been commissioned to debut in Toronto in the coming months. In total, the American-Canadian singer-songwriter has released nine studio albums in addition to three live recordings and a trio of EPs. Tickets for this concert, priced between $49 and $84, are available at the ECA Box Office (410 Fourth Avenue North, Edmonds), by calling 425-275-9595, or online at www.ec4arts.org.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Ciara will join forces, along with Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, for an upcoming music event titled 'Youth. Equity. Access.' The show, to feature performances by the hip hop duo and R&B star, as well as showcase the talents of local area students, will take place in the 2500 seat S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium at Benaroya Hall. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Equity Fund, Russell and Ciara's Why Not You Foundation and the Seattle Symphony's Education Programs. This one-night-only event will feature Seattle celebrities alongside the next generation of artists for an unforgettable evening of music. For ticket information, go to www.seattlesymphony.org.

Speaking of special performances at the Edmonds Center for the Arts, Latin great Sergio Mendes will play the venue on June 11. The Brazilian musician is a pioneer of the bossa nova sound, a fusion of jazz and funk, and has recorded over 35 albums in his career that began in 1961. He scored three Top 10 hits in the US, in 1968 twice with 'The Look of Love' and 'The Fool on the Hill', then in 1983 with the pop ballad 'Never Gonna Let You Go', which featured vocalists Joe Pizzulo and Leeza Miller. Mendes has won a total of three Grammys, two of them Latin Grammy Awards. Tickets, priced between $49 and $84, are available for purchase at the ECA Box Office (410 Fourth Avenue North, Edmonds), by calling 425-275-9595, or online at www.ec4arts.org.
