Kitten LaRue reflects on 10 years of 'J'ADORE!'

by Jessica Price - SGN Contributing Writer

'J'ADORE! A Burlesque Valentine'
THE TRIPLE DOOR
February 9-14

It's hard to believe that The Atomic Bombshells' annual Valentine's spectacular 'J'ADORE!' is now in its tenth year. The Atomic Bombshells have set the high bar for stellar variety shows since the early aughts, evolving over the years from the original five bombshells to an ever-growing family of stripteasers, drag kings and queens as well as top-notch dancers and unclassifiable performance artists such as The Stranger Genius Awards winner Cherdonna.

The Bombshells, like producer/performer Kitten LaRue, have been influenced by everything from MGM musicals to summers spent performing in Provincetown. You might say that the Bombshells have grown up on stage - developing not only their own unique artistry, but tapping into a deep well of like-minded and always provocative guest stars.

In looking back over ten years of 'J'ADORE!' Kitten says that no matter where in the world she is (Kitten splits her time performing all over the globe as one half of 'married drag dyke superduo' Kitten N' Lou), she knows she can count on and return to the Bombshells.

'After a decade of working together, The Atomic Bombshells have become a well-oiled striptease machine,' she says. 'We typically start rehearsals for a new group act about a month before the show, and I love that even though Lou and I are on the road constantly, I can count on the troupe to learn the choreography we create and have it nailed by opening night. I know I'm biased, but this might be the most accomplished group of award-winning and professional individuals assembled into one troupe you could possibly find in our field.'

No two shows are ever the same, Kitten explains. 'The show changes a ton every year with new guest stars and acts, but we always keep the central theme of big glittery fabulous LOVE intact! This year we're thrilled to bring back The Purple Lemonade dance collective, who blew everyone's minds last year, and will be debuting a brand new and epic opening act featuring The Atomic Bombshells and Cherdonna.'

Fans of previous incarnations of the show will not be disappointed - some classics will be revisited and with any luck some of the gigantic, over-the-top costumes from the last ten years will make an appearance.

'The costumes are a mix of incredibly talented designers, including Danial Webster Designs, and our own J. Von Stratton's creations. This year's not-to-be-missed moments: Ruby Mimosa debuting a new Catherine D'lish pink champagne dressing gown, J. Von's epic new mermaid fantasy, and of course, Faggedy Randy's giant singing teddy bear costume is out of control. We like to keep the set for this show feeling like a true classic burlesque and cabaret hall with our signature giant old-school light up burlesque marquee sign and the fabulous glittering J'ADORE heart drop.'

There's no rest for The World's Show-Busiest Couple. After reuniting with The Atomic Bombshells, Kitten N' Lou are touring Europe in the spring and will be bringing a brand new Easter spectacle to one of their other hometowns, New Orleans. Catch the Bombshells with someone you love on Valentine's weekend at The Triple Door.

'J'ADORE! A Burlesque Valentine' runs February 9-14 at The Triple Door (216 Union St). Tickets: $28-$45. For more information and tickets, visit thetripledoor.net/ or phone 206-838-4333.
