Generations Aging with Pride creates new Seattle & King County LGBTQ Aging Advisory Group

Generations Aging with Pride, funded by the City of Seattle's Aging and Disability Services, hosted an engaging Community Supporter Event with sixty-five people gathering for conversations on ways to best address the needs of older LGBTQ adults. Because of the feedback received at the event, Generations Aging with Pride along with the UW Center for LGBTQ Aging and Health, have formed a new Seattle & King County LGBTQ Aging Advisory Group.

'We are so pleased with the success of the event and interest in LGBTQ aging in our communities, said Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen, Board Co-Chair of Generations Aging with Pride and UW Professor. She added, 'I've worked in this field for over two decades and it is exciting that our elders are no longer relegated to shadows but rather are gathered together to provide leadership in addressing aging needs in our communities.'

Representative Macri of the 43rd District added her support for LGBTQ aging and Generations Aging with Pride, as she honored the 'pioneers that paved the way for the rights we enjoy today.'

'Generations Aging with Pride is here to serve as a HUB and clearinghouse for LGBTQ aging in the Seattle and King County area,' added Ruben Rivera-Jackman, Board Co-Chair of Generations Aging with Pride.

At the supporter reception the attendees gathered together to discuss: 1) Understanding our Needs; 2) Creating Supportive Environments; 3) Advancing LGBTQ Issues; 4) Building Generations Aging with Pride; and 5) Activities and How to Get There.

Dozens of exciting ideas were generated by the spirited discussions. Based on the feedback, the organization has established the new Seattle & King County LGBTQ Aging Advisory Group, which will meet quarterly to achieve the following goals:

o Create a mechanism where all LGBTQ and aging organizations can collaborate and work together to address the needs of LGBTQ elders;

o Provide members with on-going opportunities to share resources and ideas;

o Generate innovative ways together to address existing and emerging needs of LGBTQ elders, families and caregivers.

Other ideas that were raised at the supporter community engagement event included:

o Create a safe space for peo o Help people stay in their own homes through caregiver support, volunteer help, and referrals for LGBTQ-friendly services;

o Create a central hub with information flowing both ways;

o Develop a multi-pronged fundraising plan; and

o Numerous other creative initiatives.

The excitement of possibilities motivated many participants to sign-up to volunteer with Generations Aging with Pride to implement Action Steps. Other volunteer opportunities include assisting with website design, accounting, fund-raising, administrative support and teaching recreation and enrichment activities.
