Unlike everyone else, Lorena Gonzalez is not running for mayor

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

At least one prominent local pol is not running for mayor.

Seattle City Councilmember Lorena Gonzalez announced she will not run for mayor in a May 16 press release.

'After speaking with my family and much consideration, I have decided to not enter the Seattle mayor's race in 2017,' said González in the statement.

'While being mayor of Seattle would be an incredible honor, I remain focused on the work we have yet to accomplish on the Seattle City Council.

'Over the next four years, I am uniquely positioned to continue protecting our immigrant and refugee families and championing paid family and medical leave, police reform, and housing affordability.'

Instead of jumping into the already-crowded mayoral race, Gonzalez said she will continue her run for re-election to her at-large City Council seat, one of the two at-large seats up for election this November.

She faces only token opposition for the seat, as opposed to a grueling battle if she chose to run for mayor.

With Mayor Ed Murray out of the race, Gonzalez would have had to square off against former US Attorney Jenny Durkan, former mayor Mike McGinn, labor leader and state Sen. Bob Hasegawa, spoken word artist and Black Lives Matter activist Nikkita Oliver, and nine others.

Gonzalez is a civil rights attorney and was once counsel to mayor Ed Murray, who warmly endorsed her first campaign for City Council in 2015.

As a new City Councilmember, González made a name for herself by sponsoring a number of progressive measures - a bill to ban conversion therapy, a secure scheduling ordinance, and a measure to create a legal defense fund for immigrants.

She has also promised to introduce an ordinance mandating paid family leave if the state legislature does not act on a statewide bill.
