Standing up for LGBTQ diversity

Black lives matter. That's especially true for families composed of black LGBTQ parents that face the recent political winds of change in a conservative direction. That's why Seattle's Lesbian and Gay Child Care Task Force is focusing a large part of its recruitment efforts for its newly revived annual calendar on LGBTQ people of color with young children. Politics were part of the effort that revived the organization's once popular wall calendar despite the presence of digital alternatives. 'We must assure all children see families who look like them, ' says Bill Sanders, the task force's chair.'

The forthcoming 2018 calendar revives a once-popular promotional effort for the organization charged with advancing early-learning environments that celebrate diversity and a bias-free curriculum. In a world not long ago, where same-sex marriage and gay adoptions had become the law of the land, some of the demand for the wall calendar diminished, especially in a world where calendars became dynamic and fit into a pocket. The calendar was last printed in 2015.

The Task Force membership represents a coalition of early childhood educators in the greater Seattle area. Since 1998 the task force has been promoting early learning environments welcoming to all families. In 2013 the task force developed a set of four simple puzzles for classrooms that used photographs of the same folks who had previously been calendar families. The calendar is distributed through Seattle area schools, counseling offices, colleges and universities. Families shown in the calendar receive a free copy and a thumb-drive of a selection of pictures taken by the photographer in the individual photo shoot.

The group's photographer is now preparing to take pictures in the early spring. If your family is LGBTQ and at least one parent is black please join our mission to represent the beautiful diversity of the Seattle metropolitan area, contact Bill Sanders by email - bill.sanders@seattle.gov - or by telephone at (206) 684-0938.
