OUTBOUND: New flights to Guadalajara and Shenzen out of Sea-Tac launching soon

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Wheels up to Guadalajara, Mexico . . . and Shenzen, China! Coming soon, you'll be able to fly to both cities non-stop from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA); the Shenzen flight continues onto Xiamen. Two international carriers will begin service to these destinations in the coming months, starting with Volaris Airlines' inaugural flight to Mexico's second largest urban area on July 7. Passengers will depart Seattle at 11:15 p.m. and arrive the next day at 6:06 a.m. in Guadalajara; and return with a 6:33 p.m. departure out of Mexico, landing back at Sea-Tac the same day at 9:30 p.m. Volaris will utilize an A320 for this route, scheduled to run three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

On September 26, Xiamen Airlines will connect Seattle travelers to Xiamen, China with a stop in Shenzen. Passengers will depart Sea-Tac at 1:25 p.m. and arrive the next day at 6:15 p.m. in Shenzen, then departing two hours later at 8:15 p.m. with a 9:25 p.m. landing in Xiamen. On the return, passengers will depart Xiamen at 9:30 a.m. with a 10:45 a.m. arrival at Shenzen, then leaving two hours later at 12:45 p.m., landing the same day in Seattle at 10:25 a.m. The Chinese carrier will operate the route on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a 787-8 aircraft and premiere class passengers will be able to access The Club at SEA prior to departure.

The Pike Place Market isn't just for daytimers anymore. On June 1, the iconic downtown tourist attraction kicked off its Pike Place Evening Farmers Market, staying open to the public from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. through October 12 on Wednesdays. Beecher's Handmade Cheese, Rachel's Ginger Beer and Local Color coffee shop are a few businesses that will offer locally made products during the evening market season. A culinary class and demonstration series that includes pasta making with Michela Tartaglia from Cucina Casalinga and a Pan-Seared Ling Cod Provencal cooking lesson by Skillet Diner's Nick Novello. Classes and demonstrations are priced at $27 with tickets available at brownpapertickets.com.

The Market itself is free and open to the public. Additionally, the Pike Place Market operates three weekly farmers markets during the summer months outside of its central location, at City Hall Plaza on Tuesdays, South Lake Union on Thursdays and First Hill on Fridays. Each is open weekly from May 31 through October 12, giving downtown shoppers the opportunity to purchase fresh produce, natural items like hazelnuts, honey, jams and preserves, plus artisan foods such as Honest Biscuits and Ellenos Yogurt, and of course, flower bouquets grown by Washington farmers. For more information, visit pikeplacemarket.org.

Tennis, anyone? You can watch about ten of the best men's tennis players on the planet compete here in the Northwest next month when Portland hosts the 2016 Davis Cup Quarterfinals. USA will face Croatia in the World Group quarterfinals, taking place July 15-17 at the Tualatin [Oregon] Tennis Center. Single and three-day ticket prices range between $135 and $500. The official teams have yet to be announced, but expect to see John Isner, Jack Sock and the Bryan brothers (Bob and Mike) compete for USA, while Marin Cilic, Ivo Karlovic, Borna Coric and Ivan Dodig will probably be named to the Croatian team. Davis Cup is a team challenge, in which the players represent their countries in singles and doubles matches. For more information, or to buy tickets, go to daviscup.com.

Finally, if you're planning trips to Las Vegas or Denver, or considering going to either destination, be sure to grab a copy of our special Pride issue on June 24. Find out what it's like to stay at the luxurious ARIA Resort & Casino Sky Suites in Sin City and indulge at the Bellagio's award-winning spa, and in Denver I'll recommend a wonderful, fairly new artsy hotel surrounded by museums and take you on a Gay bar crawl in three different neighborhoods.
