IN MEMORIAM: Valerie (Val) Jean Valrejean

Valerie (Val) Jean Valrejean, 67, went to meet her Savior on March 29th, 2016 from the Ray Hickey House in Vancouver, Washington after fighting a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Val was born on February 3rd, 1949 in Seattle, Washington. She was the daughter of Shirley Rose Honroth and Gilbert Henry Bailey. Val was the oldest living child of 8 children.

Val graduated from Olympia High School. She continued her education at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington and transferred to the University of Washington where she received her bachelor's degree in Psychology, with a minor in History. Later she returned to school and graduated with an MSW degree from Portland State University.

During her life, she was a minister with the Metropolitan Community Churches and pastored churches in California and Washington state. She went on to work as a social worker at Cascadia and Allied Health in Portland, Oregon. No matter what Val did, she brought her own unique commitment to ministering to people's needs. Even in her final days and weeks, her courage and optimism blessed everyone who came in contact with her. In conversation with one friend during that time she shared that her experience had taught her that 'forgiveness is the most important thing to learn.' Her wit and wisdom always made for engaging conversation, and the twinkle in her eye and dimpled smile could brighten the darkest day, and warm the coldest heart. She will be greatly missed.

Val is survived by her partner Kathy Valrejean and daughter Rebecca Salazar; sisters Vicki Gifford (Denzel Gifford) Mary Kinder (Tim Kinder), Dianna Mitchell; and brother Tracy Schey. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews, and countless friends. Val was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers Robert, Patrick, and Kevin.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday April 16th, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., at the Salmon Creek United Methodist Church, 12217 NE Hwy 99 Vancouver WA 98686. Potluck to follow.

In lieu of flowers gifts can be made in memory of Val to our friends at the Ray Hickey House. 2112 E. Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver, WA 98661.
