Wizard of Ahhhs:
Robbie Turner eliminated from 'RuPaul's Drag Race'

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

It was the end of the (Yellow Brick) road for local drag performer Robbie Turner. And what a strange coincidence that he was sent back to the Emerald City after being eliminated from 'RuPaul's Drag Race' on a Wizard of Oz challenge. Or, was it coincidence? We'll never know. What we do know is that it was an unfortunate exit that happened all too soon.

On an all-new episode that aired on April 11, the seven remaining contestants entered the workroom still stunned, yet relieved and content, with the elimination of Acid Betty from the previous week. After failing miserably at impersonating Nancy Grace on the Snatch Game, coupled with a forgettable lipsync of Madonna's 'Causing a Commotion,' Betty got the big ol' boot.

Bob The Drag Queen was the previous week's winner, which meant the other queens were slightly bitter, including dreadlock diva Thorgy Thor; I don't even want to know what she's got whipped up in that tornado of a mop on her head - rubberbands? violin bow? straws? snacks? But the real drama continued to come from Derrick Barry, who loves to throw every shade of shade possible, but interprets any form of criticism given to him as a personal attack.

At this point, with three maxi challenge wins and a whole lotta confidence, Bob The Drag Queen appears to be the clear frontrunner for this season's title with Kim Chi and Thorgy Thor right behind; though Chi Chi DeVayne might surprise. So it seems natural that everyone wants Bob to break a leg, literally, and come crashing down. But that ain't gonna happen. Instead, Bob won the mini challenge, too, out-reading everybody in the annual reading-is-fundamental diss fest that seemed tame (and lame) compared to other seasons.

For the maxi challenge, the seven queens were paired with the cast of Lifetime's 'Little Women: LA' and had to design outfits for their teams inspired by characters from The Wizard of Oz. Oh, and each team had to collaborate on an original interpretive dance for the runway. The women chose the drag queens they wanted to work with, so Terra (aka Mini Britney) picked Derrick, Tonya went with Chi Chi, Briana chose Kim Chi, Brittney selected Thorgy Thor, Christy nabbed Robbie Turner and Elena joined forces with Bob and The Drag Queen. Most of these pairings were matches made in heaven, or in Derrick and Terra's case, hell; these two had everything evil in common.

This challenge pitted the sewers vs. the hot gluers, those who could actually design and stitch together a piece of couture fashion from scratch vs. those who could only create a mess. There were great bonding moments between the women and drag queens, most noticeably Tonya and Chi Chi; the former giving the latter encouragement and sharing her experiences of being both a little person and mom. There just seemed to be mutual respect among the matched duos and a willingness to work with each other.

The team names + characters were as follows: Chi Chi and Ti Ti DeVayne (Dorothy), Bob The Drag Queen and Rob The Faux Queen (Glinda The Good Witch), Naomi Smalls and Jazzy Jems (The Scarecrow), Derrick and Terra Barry (Tin Woodsman), Robbie and Hedda Turner (The Cowardly Lion), Thorgy Thor and Thorgeous (The Citizen of Emerald City) and Kim Chi and Miss Chi (The Wicked Witch). Um, where was Toto, or the flying monkeys?

Basically, nobody excelled at this challenge. But, Naomi put the most thought into her designs and interpretive dance, so she deserved the win based on effort, and they were the most stylish of the bunch. Besides RuPaul and Michelle Visage, sitting on the judges panel were Ross Matthews, Carson Kressley and Todrick Hall.

It happens every season that Ru asks the remaining queens who among them should be sent home; the two names that came up this time were Derrick and Chi Chi, rightfully so. But the judges reserved their harshest criticisms for Robbie and Derrick, so you pretty much knew they were going to land in the bottom two. And so it was. Robbie and Derrick faced off in the lipsync-for-your-life battle to Icona Pop's 'I Love It'; neither of them performed well and Derrick looked a bit more coordinated up there, so alas the Seattle queen sashayed away with a (lion's) tail between his legs. Derrick then had a meltdown on stage, giving some boo-hoo story about who-knows-what (I muted my TV).

A more memorable battle took place in 'Untucked,' where a vicious Derrick went after Chi Chi for putting little effort into his outfits; meanwhile the 'horse penises' on his own shoulder pads were coming unstitched. I really like how on 'Untucked' we get to see the final moments of the eliminated queens packing their stuff and leaving the studios; it was nice that a few of the contestants left handwritten notes for Robbie, who was a class act throughout the season.

We'll miss you, Robbie. But you've done us proud in Seattle!
