Paul McCartney returning to Seattle next month

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Paul McCartney fans in Seattle will have another opportunity to come together when his upcoming tour lands at Key Arena next month. The legendary artist - former Beatle, Wings band member and celebrated solo performer - last played the Emerald City in July 2013 at Safeco Field, a show that got rave reviews not only for its extended set list, but also for a jam session that featured the remaining members of Nirvana. The 'One on One Tour' promises to unveil a dazzling re-designed set, dozens of classics from McCartney's vast catalog and no shortage of surprises. In the past year alone, the music icon has appeared in concerts across North America, Europe and two Asian countries, Japan and South Korea. Tickets for the April 17 performance at Key Arena go on sale to the general public on March 14 (10 a.m.) at the Key Arena Box Office, Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, or charge by phone at (800) 745-3000.

Making a Seattle return as well is the singing string quartet Well-Strung. The multi-talented, four-piece unit - Edmund Bagnell (1st violin), Chris Marchant (2nd violin), Daniel Shevlin (cello), Trevor Wadleigh (viola) - perform various genres of music, from classical numbers to Disney songs to Top 40 hits. Based in New York, the Gay ensemble has toured around the country, performing their eclectic blend of music to live audiences and to viewers tuned into 'The TODAY Show,' 'Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen' and at the Democratic National Committee's Gala in NYC that honored President Obama. Additionally, they've appeared with Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald and Neil Patrick Harris. You might recall quartet member Wadleigh interviewing with Seattle Gay News in 2014, recalling his memories of growing up in Kent and attending college at the University of Puget Sound. You can catch Well-Strung at The Neptune Theatre on March 16. For tickets go to stgpresents.org, or purchase them in person at the Paramount Theatre box office.

One of the most breathtaking spots in the Northwest to watch a live show is Chateau Ste. Michelle. The surrounding forest and picturesque valley setting and remote location all make for a memorable experience. The 2016 Summer Concert Series is being announced piecemeal, but thus far the lineup is shaping up to be phenomenal; as of now, Paul Simon will kick things off with back-to-back sold out performances on May 28 and 29, followed by two evenings of Bob Dylan with special guest Mavis Staples on June 4 and 5. The other artist scheduled to appear at the winery so far is Josh Groban on August 23; and that show is sold out as well. Expect more concerts to be added to the series, which takes place outdoors at the Woodinville venue. For tickets and further information, log on to ste-michelle.com.

Paul Caldwell has been chosen as the new Artistic Director for the Seattle Men's Chorus, replacing Dennis Coleman after he announced his retirement early last year. A wide net was cast to find a successor to Coleman, who has led the chorus for 35 years. Caldwell is in the process of relocating to Seattle from the Chicago area, where he served as Artistic Director for the Youth Choral Theatre of Chicago, Windy City Gay Chorus and Windy City Treble Quire. 'Paul's national reputation as a talented conductor and composer makes him a great choice. I'm proud to pass on the baton to him and look forward to seeing how he builds on our mission to entertain and inspire,' stated Coleman in a press release. Caldwell's music has been featured on PBS, listened to at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and concert venues around the globe. Seattle Gay News is in the process of scheduling an interview with Paul Caldwell and we'll have an announcement on this soon. Don't forget to buy tickets for SMC's upcoming production, 'Everything Broadway,' on April 2 and 3 at McCaw Hall; you can purchase them at seattlechoruses.org.

Finally, tour dates will soon be announced for Dolly Parton, who is embarking on a 60-date road outing this year. There's an excellent possibility she'll play in Seattle, or nearby. Stay glued.
