We are not amused!

Queen Elizabeth may not approve of same-sex marriage

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Queen Elizabeth does not approve of same-sex marriage, according to a report published in the British newspaper The Daily Mail.

However, Buckingham Palace sources have referred journalists to a PinkNews story saying she thought it was 'wonderful.'

The Daily Mail quoted a source it identified as 'a close friend' of the Queen.

'I said to her, couldn't she do something about it,' the source told The Mail, 'And she replied 'I can't. I can only advise and warn.'

The Queen gave royal assent to the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in July 2013, allowing it to become law. It took effect in March 2014.

According to British legal precedent, the Queen must maintain political neutrality and 'assent' to laws legally passed by Parliament. If she disagrees with a law, she is not allowed to veto it, as a U.S. president is, but she may 'warn' her prime minister about a law's negative consequences or 'advise' him to amend it.

'It was the 'marriage' thing that she thought was wrong,' The Mail's source claimed, 'because marriage ought to be sacrosanct between a man and a woman.'

The Queen is also the head of the Church of England, which does not sanction same-sex marriages.

Nevertheless, there have been reports that she privately supported the bill legalizing same-sex marriage.

In February 2015, Gay TV celebrity Stephen Fry quoted the Queen as saying it was 'absolutely wonderful' that Gay and Lesbian couples could marry.

'When the Queen signed the royal assent for the equal marriages act, allowing gay people to marry for the first time, she put it down and said, 'Well, who'd have thought 62 years ago, when I came to the throne, I'd be signing something like this? Isn't it wonderful?' Fry said on British TV's Jonathan Ross Show.

'I don't know whether this is true,' Fry added, 'but there's an Italian saying, 'If it's not true, it's well founded.'

In the wake of controversy generated by the Daily Mail report, Buckingham Palace spokespeople cited Fry's remarks reprinted by PinkNews, a British LGBT publication.

Beyond that, Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the reports.

'We do not comment on private conversations,' a palace spokesperson said.
