Panasonic to recognize same-sex marriages

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Japanese electronics giant Panasonic will recognize its employees' same-sex marriages starting in April this year.

According to Mainichi Shinbun newspaper, Panasonic employees will be able to enroll their spouses in the company's benefits programs and take leave for family weddings and funerals.

The company is also rewriting its employee manual to include new rules against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Panasonic employs 250,000 people worldwide. Other international corporations - IBM, for example - also recognize same-sex spouses in Japan.

The company is grappling with how to define 'marriage' and 'spouse.' Same-sex marriage is not prohibited by Japanese law, but only a few jurisdictions will conduct same-sex marriages.

The Japanese government is opposed to Gay and Lesbian marriages and has taken steps to prevent municipalities from allowing them.

In March 2015 the Shibuya ward of Tokyo - a fashion, shopping, and nightlife district - began performing same-sex marriages, and in response the government established a 'Special Committee to Protect Family Ties.' The committee then started drafting legal objections to same-sex marriage.

However, Japan's Ministry of Justice determined that 'because there is no legislation to prohibit allowing same-sex marriages, it cannot be said that there is a legal problem' with going ahead with them.

In July 2015, Tokyo's Setagaya ward announced that it would also marry Gay and Lesbian couples, and in November 2015 the city of Takarazuka followed suit.

As early as June 2011, Kyoto's Shunko-in Zen temple announced that it would perform same-sex marriage ceremonies as part of Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.

Japan has no civil rights laws protecting its LGBT residents against discrimination, however.
