Special concert slated for roof of Pike Place Market

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

I've never seen anyone perform atop the Pike Place Market before, but it will be happening very soon. Mike McCready (Pearl Jam, Mad Season), Duff McKagan (Guns n' Roses, Velvet Revolver), Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Tuatara) and Mark Arm (Mudhoney) will join forces on Sunday, August 23 at the historical landmark in downtown Seattle for a tribute to rock icons Iggy and the Stooges. The free concert will take place on the Market's rooftop, beginning at 7 p.m., and will feature songs by the influential punk band; the exact location of the show will be directly above the 'Public Market Center' sign and giant clock. This unique musical event is hosted by local radio station KEXP.

Madonna tour spoiler alert. Don't read past this, if you're planning to attend her Portland concert, or another show, on her upcoming tour. Okay, now let's talk about the set list. Rumored to be included in the show are 'Like a Virgin,' 'Who's That Girl,' 'La Isla Bonita,' 'Dress You Up,' 'Take a Bow,' 'True Blue,' 'Music,' 'Living for Love,' 'Ghosttown,' 'Inside Out,' 'Deeper and Deeper/Girl Gone Wild,' and about nine or ten other songs. If this holds true, it will be epic!

Now let's talk about the wardrobe. Madonna is collaborating with Miu Miu, Alexander Wang, Prada, Jeremy Scott (for Moschino), Alessandro Michelle (for Gucci), Fausto Puglisi, and Swarovski for her on-stage outfits and attire, all overseen by costume designer Arianne Phillips.

The 'Rebel Heart Tour,' kicking off September 9 in Montreal, was originally scheduled to launch in Miami this month - a bummer for me because I had already booked my flights to Florida before she changed her plans, so now I'll just have to spend four long days on the beach instead (argh!). If you haven't purchased your Madonna tickets yet for the Portland concert, on October 17, they are available at livenation.com.

The initial lineup for the 2015 Earshot Jazz Festival, now in its 27th year, has been announced. Two jazz titans, Wayne Shorter and Charles Lloyd, both saxophonists, are each set to appear with their respective quartets. The Wayne Shorter Quartet, performing October 11 at Benaroya Hall will consist of Brian Blade (drums), Danilo PĂ©rez (piano), and John Patitucci (bass), while the Charles Lloyd Quartet, playing October 17 at Town Hall Seattle will feature Gerald Clayton (piano), Joe Sanders (bass), and Kendrick Scott (drums). Other headlining artists include the Brad Mehldau Trio at Town Hall (November 13) and South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela at the Triple Door (November 17 and 18). Also appearing are the Chris Potter Trio, Anat Cohen Quartet, Myra Melford's Snowy Egret, and the Scott Amendola Band with Nels Cline and Jenny Scheinman. For more information, go to earshot.org, or call (206) 547-6763. The complete lineup will be available on August 24; the festival runs October 9-November 18. www.earshot.org

Grammy-winning group Los Lobos have scheduled a concert at Tacoma's Pantages Theater on November 13 with Seattle-based opener Leroy Bell. Tickets are available at BroadwayCenter.org. Another Grammy-winning act, dance outfit Clean Bandit, is set to appear September 13 at The Neptune; tickets are available at Tickets.com. And, female punk band L7 will perform November 3 at The Showbox Market; buy tickets at axs.com.

Finally, I'll be attending all three days of Bumbershoot next month. For previews, reviews, and updates, stay glued to The Music Lounge.
