SEAMEC announces early endorsement of Herb Krohn for Port Commissioner

SEAMEC has announced its early endorsement of Herb Krohn for Seattle Port Commissioner, Position 5.

Herb Krohn is the Washington State Legislative Director for the United Transportation Union (UTU), which represents railroad and other transit workers. He also serves on the boards of Equal Rights Washington and SEAMEC.

Position 5 is the seat now held by Bill Bryant, who has announced he will not run for reelection.

The Seattle Port Commission is an elected body that oversees the management of both the Seattle seaport and SeaTac airport.

This is not Krohn's first run for public office. In 1986 he became the first openly Gay candidate in the state to win a contested primary election, running for the state Senate in the 32nd District. In the general election, he received SEAMEC's highest rating and a co-endorsement with incumbent Al Williams.

SEAMEC bases its endorsements on interviews with candidates for public office, research into candidates' backgrounds and public statements, and their records on issues of importance to the LGBT community.

Early endorsements are given only when the candidates have shown exceptional commitment to LGBT rights and have a documented record of work on issues affecting the community.

The endorsement of Herb Krohn reflects his political activism, his long service to SEAMEC, and his work with Equal Rights Washington.
