Farewell Fuiten: Anti-Gay bigot retires

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Notorious anti-Gay pastor Joe Fuiten announced May 4 that he will retire from his Cedar Park Assembly of God church.

Fuiten, now 65, was once a leading figure among anti-Gay evangelicals, but came to be an even bigger thorn in the side of his fellow Christians than he was for the LGBT community.

In 2006, Fuiten was one of the brains behind Referendum 65, an attempt to repeal the state's newly-passed LGBT civil rights law.

He soon fell afoul of the measure's other sponsor, Tim Eyman. While Eyman grabbed the media spotlight, Fuiten directed the grass roots signature gathering. The result was that the measure failed even to get on the ballot.

Fuiten blamed Eyman for the failure, saying 'Tim Eyman has a knack for messing stuff up.'

Eyman reciprocated the hostility. When asked whether he would participate in the 2012 Referendum 74 campaign to repeal the marriage equality law, which Fuiten also backed, Eyman exclaimed, 'Gawwwd no! ...Given my experience in 2006, I have nothing to gain from talking about this issue.'

In 2009, Fuiten refused to support Referendum 71, the effort to repeal the state's 'everything but marriage' domestic partnership law because of his personal grievances against R-71 leaders Ken Hutcherson, Joseph Backholm, and Gary Randall.

When R-71 went down to defeat, Fuiten again blamed his Christian colleagues, just as he had three years earlier.

'Because of the lack of strategic planning on our side of the R-71 campaign, I called our side a 'leaderless army,' Fuiten wrote in an email to his supporters.

'Gary Randall objected to that. Maybe he was right. When you consider how little money was put into this effort by Randall's organization, maybe it should have been an armyless leader.'

In 2012, Fuiten and Backholm tried to file competing versions of what would become Referendum 74, to repeal the state's marriage equality law. Backholm's version eventually made it to the ballot, but Fuiten backed it in spite of their previous friction.

In the unsuccessful R-74 campaign, Fuiten served as a conduit channeling NOM funds into the anti-equality coffers.

Fuiten was not only anti-Gay, but also dabbled in broadly right-wing politics. In 2008, he chaired the Washington campaign for former Arkansas Governor and Southern Baptist minister Mike Huckabee. In 2012 he endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and chaired the Gingrich Faith Leaders Coalition.

His church was also a way station on the right-wing lecture circuit, hosting speakers like Michelle Malkin and Dinesh D'Souza.
