Greek election: A victory for the LGBT community?

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The stunning victory of SYRIZA - the Coalition of the Radical Left - in Greece's January 25 election has European central bankers reeling, working class Greeks celebrating, and the country's LGBT community cautiously optimistic.

SYRIZA is the only Greek party represented in parliament to have taken a stand for same-sex marriage, with SYRIZA leader and new Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras calling for a number of LGBT rights reforms in the past.

Same-sex couples are banned from adopting children in Greece, and the country does not recognize same-sex relationships. Syriza introduced a bill in 2013 that would have recognized domestic partnerships for both same- and opposite-sex couples, but the measure was voted down.

Tsipras himself is in a long-term but unmarried relationship with his partner, Peristera Batziana. The couple has two sons, the youngest named Ernesto in memory of his boyhood hero, Ernesto Che Guevara.

Tsipras is also an atheist, and was the first Greek Prime Minister in history to be sworn in without the assistance of the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Athens.

While the current Archbishop, Ieronymos, is a centrist who has accommodated himself to the idea of LGBT rights, many of his colleagues are ferociously anti-Gay.

At the time SYRIZA introduced its domestic partnership bill in 2013, for example, Bishop Seraphim of Piraeus said that being Gay is a 'terrible sin,' and threatened to excommunicate any member of parliament who voted for the measure.

Bishop Seraphim is also noted for borderline-crazy anti-Semitism, having once claimed that 'Adolf Hitler was an instrument of world Zionism.' Nevertheless, his views on LGBT rights are shared by many Orthodox clerics and right-wing politicians allied with them.

In recent months, there has been a surge of Gay-bashing incidents in Athens linked to the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party. Golden Dawn took third place in the recent election, in spite of the fact that its leaders are all in jail awaiting trial on racketeering charges.

It remains to be seen whether SYRIZA's victory will result in immediate progress for LGBT rights in Greece. The new government has its hands full trying to negotiate debt reduction with the European Central Bank and the IMF, and to restart Greece's stalled economy.

Tsipras declined to make LGBT rights part of his party's election platform, which focused only on economic issues.

'It is a difficult subject that requires dialogue,' he said about adoption rights for same-sex couples. 'There are contradictions in the scientific community about this and we will not include it in our policy program.'

SYRIZA also fell two seats shy of a majority in parliament, and had to form a coalition with the right-wing populist Independent Greeks party. Independent Greeks is aligned with the left on economic issues, but is against legal recognition of LGBT rights.
