OUTBOUND: Belgian Pride reaches 20-year milestone

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

One of the largest and most festive Pride celebrations in Europe is celebrating a milestone this year. Belgian Pride, which welcomed 100,000 people last spring to downtown Brussels, will turn 20 years old when it takes place on May 16, 2015. Leading up to the traditional parade and all-day festival, the city streets will be decorated in colorful rainbow colors beginning April 30. I attended Belgian Pride a few years ago and it was so exciting and inclusive; everyone from parents with small children to high-ranking government officials were enjoying the parade, live entertainment, and of course, the great food afterwards. The Gay bars along Rue du Marche-au-Charbon were packed solid, inside and out, with partygoers celebrating well into the early morning hours; I remember stepping over beer cans and trash everywhere on the way back to my hotel. It was a lot of fun, and if you happen to be traveling to Europe in mid-May, or need an excuse to go, consider being at Belgian Pride in Brussels, a short connecting flight from Paris, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt, or a couple of hours by train from several major European cities. For more information, visit www.Pride.be.

As if you need a reason to head up to Vancouver, I'll give you one: food. The Dine Out Vancouver Festival, happening between January 16 and February 1, features 277 participating restaurants offering prix fixe menus and special selections. But unlike other food-focused events, the 17-day Vancouver affair is an actual festival with 70 culinary presentations and tours, from film screenings to cooking demos to brunch crawls. Hotel rates for Dine Out start at $65, an unbeatable deal that deserves to be taken advantage of. For further information, full list of participating restaurants, and to make reservations, go to www.dineoutvancouver.com.

Wanna learn how to surf? Are you female? If you've answered yes to both of these questions, consider registering for South America's first-ever Lesbian surf camp on May 9-16 in Santa Catarina, Brazil. 'Here's the chance for a group of women of all sizes, ages, skill levels and nationalities to come together to learn a beautiful sport and enjoy an amazing vacation together,' stated Marta Dalla Chiesa, owner of tour operator Brazil Ecojourneys and an open Lesbian in a press release. A southern region of the country, Santa Catarina is said to be a popular destination for LGBT travelers. While there are zero non-stop flights to South America from Seattle, quick connections are available through Los Angeles. For additional information on the surf camp, go to www. gaysurfbrazil.blogspot.com.br.

Looking for an affordable and nearby honeymoon spot? Think Victoria, British Columbia. The Canadian city is just a few hours away by ferry (Victoria Clipper) and sprinkled with charming hotels and fabulous restaurants, including 10 Acres Bistro + Bar + Farm that made our year-end list of top restaurants (Best of Travel 2014, December 26 issue). We'll feature Victoria in our upcoming Weddings & Honeymoons special section on February 13 with recommendations on where to stay, what to see, and details on Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Empress.
