Still in fashion: The Vaudevillians

by Eric Andrews-Katz - SGN A&E Writer

THE VAUDEVILLIANS
SEATTLE REPERTORY THEATRE
Through November 2

The name Jinkx Monsoon has practically become a household word - and not just in her hometown of Seattle. After 'RuPaul's Drag Race: Season Five' proclaimed her as 'America's Next Drag Superstar' the boast could not have been more of a prophecy. Appearing as Ms. Kitty Witless with accompaniment by her piano player husband Doctor Dan Von Dandy (played by Major Scales), The Vaudevillians have entered Seattle and taken over the Seattle Repertory Theatre.

At the pinnacle of their career in Vaudeville, cabaret singer Kitty Witless and her husband Doctor Dan Von Dandy are caught in an avalanche when touring Antarctica in the 1920s. Frozen alive and perfectly preserved, global warming has liberated them from their icy prison and the pair returns to the stage and their fan base ninety years later. Claiming modern artists have stolen their original work, the talented couple recreates their act - with a few modern adaptations. With sharp wit, musical accompaniment, and an alleged large stash of cocaine, The Vaudevillians conquer the Emerald City.

Jinkx Monsoon (aka Jerick Hoffer) is an entertaining force to be reckoned with! Performing as Kitty Witless, Ms. Monsoon pulls on her character's persona as easily as putting on a jacket. Knowing when and where to punch lines comes naturally to many people, but Ms. Monsoon has taken it to an art form. Carefully choosing her moments to chat with (and play with) the audience, she knows how to naturally engage a crowd. Her voice is in good order and she handles the musical (re)arrangements very well when singing songs like: 'Toxic,' 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun,' or Linda Perry's 'What's Up.'

Major Scales (aka Richard Andriessen) takes to the piano as if it were a part of him. His mile-a-minute delivery is perfectly on time and his energy level seems to know no bounds. He plays the 'straight man' perfectly to Ms. Monsoon's Kitty Witless, adding a great accompaniment without trying to steal focus. While an equal force on the stage, Mr. Scales knows how to play second banana when needed. And the two interact as naturally as anyone in the audience could wish for.

The Vaudevillians have been touring the country for several years - making an impressionable appearance at the Off-Broadway Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York City from July to November 2013, enjoying several extensions.

The Vaudevillians is a musical comedy cabaret that should not be missed. No matter what your mood going in, it will be much improved by the time you leave.
