GSBA to host major candidate forum - Sept. 11 event features Seattle mayoral, City Council hopefuls

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

The Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA), the nation's largest LGBT Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Candidate Forum luncheon on Wednesday, September 11, at the Red Lion Hotel, on Fifth Avenue between Union and Pike streets in downtown Seattle.

GSBA officials say they are proud to feature some of Seattle's highest profile races that will be on the ballot in November, including Seattle mayor (Mike McGinn vs. Ed Murray), Seattle City Council Position 2 (Richard Conlin vs. Kshama Sawant), and Seattle City Council Position 8 (Mike O'Brien vs. Albert Shen).

LGBT-FOCUSED
This forum is the only one in the region focused on LGBT and small business issues.

'Our success in working toward equality in Washington is directly related to our commitment as a community to finding leaders who understand the inequities and challenges LGBT people face,' said Equal Rights Washington Executive Director Rod Hearne. 'The GSBA candidate forum presents a tremendous opportunity for the community to get to know the candidates who, when elected, will help us achieve a fairer and more inclusive society.'

According to GSBA Deputy Director Rachael Brister, attendees will get to mingle with elected officials and other candidates before the start of the official program. Deborah Brandt, formerly of KUOW, will return in her role as moderator. Each candidate will give an opening statement and then be asked questions regarding business and civil rights issues facing voters. There will be an opportunity for audience members to submit questions to the candidates.

The event is co-sponsored by Equal Rights Washington; QLaw, the GLBT Bar Association of Washington; and Terwedo Financial Services. Community partners include Gay City, Legal Voice, Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, Out in Front, Out for Sustainability, and Pride Foundation.

ABOUT THE GSBA
The Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) is this region's LGBT and Allied Chamber of Commerce proudly serving the business and nonprofit community since 1981. GSBA is the largest LGBT chamber in the United States with more than 1,000 members. More than a chamber, GSBA is a vibrant community organization with a broad and diverse membership base. GSBA is widely known throughout the Puget Sound region for its work on business development, connecting community through business, advocacy on both civil rights and business and promoting LGBT Tourism through its Travel Gay Seattle tourism initiative. In addition, GSBA invests in the next generation of leaders by sponsoring a Scholarship Fund, which has given out over $1.8 million in scholarships to Washington undergraduates since 1990. GSBA's mission is to combine business development, social action, and leadership to expand economic opportunities for the LGBT community and those who support equality for all.
