Love in black and white - Authors' event offers an in-depth look at Gay romance writing

GAY ROMANCE NORTHWEST MEET-UP
SEATTLE CENTRAL LIBRARY
September 14

If you ever wanted to know anything about the world of Queer publishing - or how to be a part of it - then mark your calendar for Saturday, September 14. The Gay Romance Northwest Meet-Up is a half-day event celebrating all things related to LGBTQ writing, editing, and publishing. Although the main focus will be on M/M fiction, all aspects of LGBT romance writing will be covered. The event will start off with a reading at the University Book Store on Friday, September 13, at 8 p.m., featuring select authors.

On Saturday, more than 30 LGBT romance authors, publishers, and those who appreciate both will converge downtown at the Central Library (1000 4th Ave.) to celebrate the joys of same-sex romance. Marlene A. Harris, consultant, e-book advocate, book reviewer, and librarian for the King County Library System, is an invited guest speaker for this special event. She will discuss how to let readers, authors, and publishers all connect through library usage, and will share ideas and views on how to create larger collections of LGBT materials - as well as how to increase the awareness of these works within the library spaces.

This will be just one of the many discussions going on throughout the day. 'The Ins & Outs of Gay Romance' will chat about the various views on the Gay romantic genre, covering several topics including how to break into M/M writing, addressing such questions as whether or not sex scenes are necessary in writing romance. Editing, publishing, and cover art will be discussed in a panel titled 'Behind the Curtain.' Attendees will learn how to submit manuscripts and work with editors and publishers, as well as the different degrees of cover art appeal. 'Diversifying and Evolving the Genre' will deal with such topics as character diversity and various ways to release your work into the community.

Each panel will have five authors of various backgrounds, genders, experience, and publishing avenues to discuss, answer questions, and share their experiences. A moderator will guide the questions, make sure panels stay on subject, and keep track of time.

After the panels, a Happy Hour will take place in the Paris Ballroom at the nearby Hotel Monaco (1101 4th Ave.), featuring food, libations, and socializing. Authors will be able to meet and chat with each other, as well as be available for signing their books for those who admire their work. Five-minute readings will take place for the crowd's enjoyment. Throughout the event, a book drive will be held to benefit Seattle's Gay City LGBT Library. The admission ticket covers all the lectures and the Happy Hour events.

JOIN THE NETWORK
Many authors living in the Seattle area and along the West Coast have never met each other. While the event is open to the public, it will also provide a way for authors to share, encourage, network, and of course promote their writing accomplishments. Both self-published authors and those with publishing contracts will be coming to Seattle from British Columbia, California, Colorado, Illinois, and even North Carolina to learn and network with other authors and publishers.

The Gay Romance Northwest Meet-Up is presented by Old Growth Northwest (a group that 'fosters creative collaboration and exchange within a robust community of writers and readers in the Pacific Northwest'). Following the lead of the GayRomLit Retreat held in New Orleans in 2011, Old Growth Northwest is working in collaboration with Seattle's Gay City to help bring awareness to their literary nonprofit achievements, including the Gay City LGBT Library. Other partnerships include GeekGirlCon, Lambda Literary Foundation, Pride Foundation, Queer Geek!, Rainbow Romance Writers, and The Seattle Lesbian.

Sponsoring the event are several publishers supporting LGBT romance writing as well as its fraternal twin, erotica. The homes of these presses range from Florida to Canada and down the West Coast and include Blind Eye Books, Bold Strokes Books (with more than 150 authors and 600 active titles), Dreamspinner Press, Extasy Books, Harmony Ink Press, Less Than Three Press, Riptide Publishing, Samhain Publishing, Storm Moon Press, and Torquere Press.

While some of the authors attending are well-known and award-winning, others are just starting out on their career path. Many will have their books for sale and signing, courtesy of the University Book Store. The Gay Romance Northwest Meet-Up is open to all and the public is encouraged to attend. Tickets are $25.
