Macklemore & Ryan Lewis snag two VMAs

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards telecast was one of the worst I've ever seen. And not just because Miley Cyrus got her jollies off with a Styrofoam finger. It was just bad all-around. I wish Lady Gaga had actually sung her new single 'Applause,' because it's a halfway decent track. Her seashell bikini was pretty cool, however. I thought Justin Timberlake's 15-minute song medley combined with tricky dance moves was the best part of the ceremony, but I was left wanting more of the 'N Sync reunion. That said, another delight was seeing hometown heroes Macklemore and Ryan Lewis win two moonman statues, one for Best Hip-Hop Video ('Can't Hold Us,' featuring Ray Dalton) and another for Best Video with a Social Message ('Same Love,' featuring Mary Lambert). A third VMA went to the cinematographer of 'Can't Hold Us.' Grammy nominations are set to be announced the first week of December. Macklemore also appeared recently on the cover of Rolling Stone.

SCOTTISH DELIGHT
Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action is the newest album by Scottish rock four-piece Franz Ferdinand. This is the follow-up to 2009's lukewarmly received Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. A brief film directed by Andy Knowles, available on the band's website (www.franzferdinand.com), coincided with the August 27 release. Franz Ferdinand unveiled a few tracks from their latest album when they performed last fall at The Showbox Market, including 'Fresh Strawberries' and 'The Universe Expanded.' Seattle isn't among the band's 17 concert dates in October, but I'm hopeful they return to the Emerald City later this year or early next. Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action is in stores now.

TURN TO STONE
R&B songstress Angie Stone is set to appear four nights at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, December 5-8. This will be the Grammy nominee's debut at the downtown concert venue, giving seven total performances on those four nights. Stone's shows are pre-sale only, no reservations - tickets must be paid for at time of booking. Visit www.jazzalley.com for ticket informatiion. The only other new concert to announce this week is The Cave Singers playing The Neptune Theatre on November 30. Go to www.stgpresents.org for ticket information.

BUMBERSHOOT: LAST CALL
Bumbershoot three-day and single-day Platinum passes are sold out, and three-day Gold passes and single-day Gold passes for Saturday and Sunday are sold out (Gold passes for Monday still available for $150). Single-day passes for all days are available for $60 (Saturday) and $56 (Sunday and Monday) online at www.bumbershoot.org. Prices will increase if purchased on day of event at the venue box office.

YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOSE
These concerts are now sold out: Adam Ant on September 7 (The Showbox Market), The Lumineers on September 21 (Marymoor Park; tickets still available for September 20), Jake Bugg on September 26 (The Nepture Theatre), Lorde on September 28 (The Showbox Market), Zedd on September 29 (The Showbox SoDo), Pearl Jam on December 6 (Key Arena), and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis on December 12 (Key Arena; tickets still available for December 10 and 11).

FAMILY FUN
Finally, Town Hall has announced its upcoming Saturday Family Concert series, which includes performances by Caspar Babypants (September 21-22), Charlie Hope (October 19), Christian Swenson (November 16), and more entertainers booked through May 2014. For the complete lineup, go to www.townhallseattle.org/upcoming/family.
