Mayor's race tightens - Murray and McGinn neck-and-neck, new poll says

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Sen. Ed Murray and Mayor Mike McGinn are virtually tied for the lead in the contest for mayor of Seattle, a new poll by KING-TV 5 shows.

The poll, released July 18, shows Murray with 22% and McGinn with 21%. The poll's stated margin of error is 4.5%.

Former City Council member Peter Steinbrueck is in third place with 14%, and current City Council member Bruce Harrell comes in fourth with 11%.

The other five candidates trail far behind, none getting more than 3% of the respondents, but there is still plenty of room for movement, with 25% saying they are still undecided. Less than three weeks remain before the August 6 primary.

Murray is up seven points over his showing in KING's May poll, while the other candidates' support has remained more or less constant.

VARIED CONSTITUENCIES
According to the poll results, the four leading candidates appeal to different segments of voters.

Murray has strong support among women, middle-aged voters, and affluent voters, while McGinn leads among the youngest voters, Latinos, and voters with incomes below $40,000.

Steinbrueck leads among self-identified independents and moderates, and among older voters. Harrell, however, leads in the oldest age bracket, and with Asian Americans.

On the same day that KING released its latest poll, the two frontrunners also announced major new endorsements. Murray was endorsed by Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest, a political arm of Planned Parenthood, and McGinn was endorsed by UFCW 21, the state's largest private-sector labor union.
