Parsons, Quinto, Lynch, Liberace movie lead LGBT contingent of Emmy nominees

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Thursday morning was an important one for those in the television industry, as nominations for the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards were revealed. Two-time Emmy winner Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and openly Gay actor-producer Neil Patrick Harris, who will host the ceremony on September 22, revealed the nominees in all of the major categories. Shortly afterward, the full list of categories was posted at www.emmys.com.

Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), who publicly came out two years ago, is up again for Best Lead Actor-Comedy. He'll compete against Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Matt LeBlanc (Episodes), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), and Louis C.K. (Louie).

Zachary Quinto, who also came out around the time Parsons did, earned a nod for Supporting Actor-Miniseries or Movie for his role on Ryan Murphy's (also Gay) anthology-themed drama series American Horror Story: Asylum. He'll go head-to-head with James Cromwell (American Horror Story: Asylum), Scott Bakula (Behind the Candelabra), John Benjamin Hickey (The Big C: Hereafter) and Peter Mullan (Top of the Lake).

Behind the Candelabra, based on the life of Liberace, earned multiple nominations across the board, including recognition for its director, Steven Soderbergh, its co-stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, the top prize of its genre, Outstanding Miniseries or Movie, and for the aforementioned Bakula.

Lynch, a winner in 2010 but missing from last year's field, has another shot of capturing the Supporting Actress-Comedy award, though she faces stiff competition from the 2011 and 2012 champ Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory), and Anna Chlumsky (Veep).

Other LGBT community members fared well in Thursday's nominations. Paris Barclay was singled out for Director-Comedy Series, helming Glee's 'Diva' episode; Nathan Lane scooped up two nods for Guest Actor-Comedy (Modern Family) and Guest Actor-Drama (The Good Wife); Dan Bucatinski landed his first mention for Guest Actor-Drama (Scandal); while Harris received a nomination for co-producing last month's Tony Awards telecast.

The Primetime Emmy Awards will be televised September 22 on CBS.
