Ed Murray: He's 'outstanding' - Muni League gives Seattle's Gay mayoral candidate its highest rating

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

State Senator Ed Murray has received the King County Municipal League's highest rating - 'outstanding' - in his race for mayor of Seattle.

Murray was the only 'outstanding' candidate in the field of nine people running for the post.

Incumbent Mayor Mike McGinn and former Seattle City Council member Peter Steinbrueck were rated 'very good,' and sitting City Council member Bruce Harrell was rated 'good.'

WHAT THE RATINGS MEAN
According to the Muni League website, an 'outstanding' candidate 'has made numerous outstanding contributions requiring skills related to the office, is a path-finding and respected leader, [and] brings knowledge and creativity to issues facing the office.'

A 'very good' candidate 'makes significant contributions, is a skilled builder of consensus, inspires confidence in the way he/she would serve, [and] is thorough and attentive to issues.'

A 'good' candidate 'has been active and effective in many roles, is capable of moving people to productive action, has a strong record of participation in problem solving, [and] shows satisfactory commitment to tackling issues.'

LIKEABLE ENOUGH
Of the minor candidates, Charles Staadecker was rated 'good,' Joey Gray and Kate Martin were 'adequate,' and Doug McQuaid and Mary Martin were 'not qualified.'

The Muni League was founded as an outgrowth of the Progressive Movement in 1910 and began evaluating candidates in 1912. It bases its evaluations on four criteria: involvement, character, effectiveness, and knowledge.

Questionnaires for all candidates are posted on the organization's website, www.munileague.org. In addition to information obtained from the questionnaires, the Muni League also interviews community leaders about their interactions with candidates. Ratings are made by a 'candidate evaluation committee' that includes community volunteers.
