Murray momentum continues - Ed rolls up endorsements

By Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The day after he was endorsed by former King County Exec and HUD Deputy Secretary Ron Sims, Ed Murray got the endorsement of a trio of city leaders.

City Council member and former mayoral rival Tim Burgess, Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes, and Pramila Jayapal, founder of the immigrant rights group One America, appeared with Murray at a morning press conference to endorse his campaign.

Burgess and Holmes have clashed with incumbent Mayor Mike McGinn on how to reform the Seattle Police Department in the wake of a stinging critique of SPD by the US Department of Justice. Police issues took up much of the discussion.

Burgess touted Murray as a candidate who is trustworthy, in implied contrast with McGinn, and someone with the wisdom to make the right decision on hiring the new Chief of Police.

Holmes criticized what he called the current administrations divisiveness and unwillingness to cooperate with others.

We cant have an excellent police force without acknowledging and addressing the problems, Holmes added.

For his part, Murray pledged to work collaboratively with the Obama Justice Department, and criticized opponent Bruce Harrells statement that he would have gone to court to fight the DOJ on the police reform issue.

In response to a question, Murray said that collective bargaining is one of my core principles, but that the Seattle Police Officers Guild labor agreement was not the problem in implementing reform of SPD.

Jayapal, a long-time immigrant rights activist, while also mentioning the need for police reform, introduced a different theme.

I know Eds passion for civil rights, and I know why immigration reform is a personal issue to him, she said, citing Murrays Irish immigrant heritage.

Jayapal added that well need a strong mayor to implement the [immigration reform] legislation that passed the US Senate on June 27.

Describing Murray as a bit of a policy wonk, Jaypal said she was confident he would combine that thoughtfulness about policy with a passion for justice.
