Brussels marks 10 years of marriage equality

by Martha Meeze - Special to the SGN

On June 20, 2003, Brussels mayor Freddy Thielemans had the honor and privilege to host the first Gay marriage of Belgium's capital city. The 10th anniversary of that event was cause for a celebration in City Hall in the presence of all Gay and Lesbian couples who were married there in the course of the last decade.

Mayor Thielemans and his deputies for Civil Status and for Equal Opportunities were keen to put this occasion in the spotlight. They organized a huge party in Brussels City Hall inviting, among others, all Gay and Lesbian couples who had gotten married in the city of Brussels.

'Belgium has been the second country ever to open up civil marriage to same-sex couples 10 years ago. We are extremely proud of our country's pioneering role in defending LGBT rights. As the capital of Europe, Brussels stands up for tolerance and openness. Our city will keep on evolving towards an even greater diversity and show its continued commitment to supporting tolerance and respect,' said Thielemans.

Since 2003, 318 same-sex marriages have been conducted in Brussels City Hall (286 male couples and 32 female couples), out of about 800 marriages in total.

Everyone was welcome to attend the symbolic ceremony. And as icing on the cake, the Gay and Lesbian couples who wished to do so were invited to renew their vows. To top off the ceremony, all present raise their glasses to this important anniversary milestone.
