Sub Pop and Hotel Max make music together

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

The Seattle-based record label that launched the careers of Nirvana, Fleet Foxes, Soundgarden, Band of Horses, and The Shins has teamed up with an artsy downtown hotel to enhance the musical experience for overnight guests. Sub Pop Records and Hotel Max jointly unveiled the 'Sub Pop Floor' at the beginning of June, allowing its occupants a unique opportunity to sift through a short stack of vinyl albums and play them on an old-school record player.

Each room on the 5th floor, where currently door exteriors are plastered with enlarged photos of familiar Seattle musicians, now offers you a chance to become acquainted with an impressive list of mostly indie artists - as well as some who've moved on to greener pastures, including major label contracts, Grammy nominations, and worldwide acclaim. You can spin a record - let's say Fleet Foxes' Helplessness Blues or Iron & Wine's Our Endless Numbered Days - or tune into a dedicated channel of Sub Pop artists' music videos on their flat-panel TVs. For additional information on a particular artist or recording, or to download it, just aim your smartphone at the QR-encrypted wall posters. Or, if you prefer to keep the vinyl copy, just pack it in your suitcase and the hotel will charge you $20 upon check-out.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Sub Pop Records, which donated generously to help pass Referendum 74 and put same-sex marriage into effect. The label will host a free event, a 'Silver Jubilee' community gathering with music and beer/wine for purchase, on July 13 in the Georgetown district. For details, go to silverjubilee.subpop.com.

Hotel Max, located on Stewart Street between 6th and 7th avenues in downtown Seattle, is a terrific boutique-style property with an edge, and a place where many touring artists stay. (It's also very Gay-friendly.) Packages include 'The Nirvana Experience' and 'I Love Rock & Roll.' For rates and availability, go to www.hotelmaxseattle.com.
