Jazz on the Lawn - Cedarbrook Lodge's summer concert series begins July 12

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Two months ago, Seattle Gay News recommended the beautiful and tranquil setting of Cedarbrook Lodge as a wedding and/or honeymoon destination. But here's another way to enjoy the scenery of this nearby resort, just minutes away from Sea-Tac Airport, without having to stay overnight (though package deals are available for those wishing to do so). Cedarbrook has just revealed the 2013 lineup for its 'Jazz on the Lawn' summer concert series, featuring a great list of regional artists who will perform on the property's manicured Evergreen Lawn - surrounded by trees, creeks, lush gardens, and an outdoor terrace.

The eclectic Friday-night series kicks off July 12 with the The Kora Band, who combine West African jazz with the kora, a 21-string instrument, with harp and lute elements. Next up is Sweeter Than the Day, who'll bring their style of modern jazz to the lawn on July 26, complete with piano, guitar, bass, drums, and crafty melodies and chord progressions. Jazz vocalist Gail Pettis, slated for August 9, can be expected to sing original works and collaborative pieces with an accompanying trio. Susan Pascal's Brazil Project wraps up the four-concert event August 23, with a unique blend of Latin rhythms and sounds that include her signature vibraphone-driven compositions.

Weather permitting, shows will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. No outside food or drinks are allowed, but a selection of small plates, local beers, and wines will be available (cash only).

Those wishing to attend one of the shows can purchase single performance tickets, priced at $20 advance (www.brownpapertickets.com) or $25 at the door. For an overnight experience, the 'Get Jazzed! Package' includes a pair of general admission tickets to any of the concerts, valet parking, and a $25 dining credit at Copperleaf Restaurant & Bar along with accommodations at Cedarbrook Lodge. The property has 104 guest rooms in two separate lodges, aside from a main lodge that houses a restaurant, bar, business center, banquet and wedding rooms, fitness center, and gift shop. And even though it's called a lodge, it's really a modern-style hotel with all of the contemporary amenities - flat-panel TVs with cable, WiFi, Keurig brewing systems, iPod alarm clocks, etc. Continental breakfast and 24-hour snack service are also complimentary for overnight guests.

Cedarbrook Lodge can send a shuttle to meet you at the airport. Just call the lodge upon arrival and they'll pick you up in the Courtesy Vehicle area of the parking garage at Island 1 or 3 in a short time (I waited only 10 minutes). By car from the airport, take International Boulevard going south, turn left at the next stoplight (188th Street), then go 1/4 mile to 36th Avenue South, turn left again, and follow that street to the lodge entrance.
