Obama to Boy Scouts: keep going!

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

President Obama this week praised the Boy Scouts of America for opening their membership to Gay boys, but urged them to go further and remove restrictions on Gay and Lesbian Scout leaders.

'The President welcomes the decision by the Boy Scouts of America to open its membership to all, regardless of sexual orientation,' White House spokesperson Shin Inouye said in a May 24 statement.

'He has long believed that the Scouts is a valuable organization that has helped educate and build character in American boys for more than a century. He continues to believe that leadership positions in the Scouts should be open to all, regardless of sexual orientation.'

As president, Obama serves as honorary president of the BSA.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan expressed similar views in a statement posted on the DOE webpage.

'A HISTORIC STEP'
'The Boy Scouts of America has been supporting the learning and development of youth for more than a century,' Duncan wrote.

'The Scouts have helped boys gain skills in camping, hiking, and nature, but also engineering, robotics, and medicine. And Scouting has been the foundation for character development for millions of young men. I can't think of a better lesson in character than one that teaches our young people to value the contributions each of us makes and respect one another. The Scouts have made a historic step in the right direction, and I encourage them to continue to move forward in ensuring equality throughout the organization.'

The Scouts decided on May 23 to drop their ban on Gay Scouts. The vote in favor of dropping the ban and opening the organization to openly Gay Scouts was 61.4% of the 1,400 members of the BSA National Council. The new rule will take effect on January 1, 2014.

The Scouts were not able to agree on a rule allowing Gay and Lesbian adults to serve in leadership positions in the organization, however.

GLAAD: WE'LL FIGHT ON
In a statement, GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Association Against Defamation), which collected more than 1.8 million signatures on a petition urging the Scouts to lift the ban on all Gay participants, said it would continue its campaign for inclusion until all rules against Gays were lifted.

'Gay parents and adults should be accepted into Scouting, and our campaign for change will continue until that happens,' GLAAD spokesperson Rich Ferraro said.

'As openly Gay youth begin participating in Scouting and earn Eagle rank, the Boy Scouts will come to realize that Gay Americans and our families only strengthen Scouting as an institution.'
