Funding our future - 44 students receive GSBA Scholarship Fund awards

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) President and CEO Louise Chernin describes last Friday evening at the GSBA Scholarship Awards Dinner as 'a night of hopes, dreams, tears, hurts, challenges, and triumphs - so poignantly and honestly shared with us.'

'It was an unforgettable and remarkable experience to listen to the stories of and meet nearly all of the 44 students to whom we were honored to award $230,000 on Friday night,' Chernin said in an e-mail to supporters. The GSBA Scholarship Fund has awarded $1.6 million in scholarships since 1990.

'Of course, we owe a huge thank-you to our wonderful Table Captains, who brought wonderful guests who care about LGBTQA students and their education,' said Chernin. Together, they raised over $96,000 for the GSBA Scholarship Fund.

A MEMORABLE EVENING
The night was full of touching tributes, Chernin recalled. 'From Sean Foy's presentation of the David Barzilai Memorial Scholarship, to Bob Dlugosh and Don McKee's presentation of the Founders Scholarship in Memory of past GSBA Board Presidents Sue Gunderson and Bentley Main, to the personal presentation of the Rich Thoelke Memorial Scholarship by Rich's loving wife Shay and daughter Richelle Monahan, we were reminded of the generous support of our fabulous donors who have established funds to encourage our future leaders for years to come.'

Notably, Microsoft, for the second year, presented three scholarships to students who will pursue a career in technology. Microsoft also sponsored the Awards Dinner alongside Carter Subaru, Seattle Goodwill, and Union Bank.

Chernin said the dinner's keynote speaker, former pro basketball player Kate Starbird, reminded GSBA 'who our true heroes are ... those scholars and families that stand up and fight for equality every day.'

Most of all, Chernin thanked GSBA members and donors for 'giving financial support and hope to LGBTQA students.'

'It is because of you and your ongoing donations, not only at the Scholarship Dinner and the Taste of GSBA, but all year, that provides such important support to our students, who often have no other means of support, so that they can go to college,' she said. 'Every day that we receive a donation we know that we can continue to grow the support we give to LGBTQA students.'
