Purr raises big bucks with bartender 'auction'

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Flesh sells. Just ask any of the participants at Wednesday evening's 'Bartender Auction,' hosted by GLAMAZONIA at Purr Cocktail Lounge in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. An annual fundraiser for the Inspire Youth Project (formerly Rise n' Shine), this year's event raised over $32,000 at press time, but according to restaurant-bar owner Barbie Humphrey that total is likely to increase when money from raffle tickets is added to the final tally.

The Inspire Youth Project (http://inspireyouthproject.org) aims to assist at-risk boys and girls with programs that foster a more stable and healthy social environment for them. Through mentorship, summer camps, peer support, teen retreats, and advocacy, participants learn to cope with challenges in their personal lives and households.

Hunky bartenders and a curvaceous female drink pourer from Purr, R Place, Lobby Bar, Madison Pub, and Diesel stripped down to colorful skivvies (provided by Under U4 Men) and paraded in front of a crowd of 250-300 people, including members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. So who raised the most cash? Purr hottie Rusty Martin (in tighty whities) raked in $13,000, after a bidding war between two buyers ended amicably with both men pooling their donations and each earning a date with him. All bartenders and winning bidders will go on activity-themed dates, according to Humphrey, which include a Mariners game, bowling night, and the 'golden ticket' grand prize, an indoor skydiving experience. In addition to the bidding, raffle tickets were sold for $25 each, the winner receiving a date with the bartender of his or her choice.

If you didn't make it, there's always next year - so start saving your pennies, especially if you want a piece of Rusty!
