Minnesota House passes marriage bill

Supporters confident of victory in Senate next week

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The anti-Gay hate group Family Research Council asked its followers to pray for 'divine intervention' to prevent the Minnesota legislature from passing a bill giving the state's Gay and Lesbian couples equal marriage rights.

It didn't work. Minnesota's House of Representatives passed the marriage equality bill on May 9, by a comfortable margin of 75 to 59.

Hundreds of people on both sides of the issue rallied at the Minnesota Capitol building, with pro-equality forces wearing orange T-shirts and holding signs that read 'I Support the Freedom to Marry.'

Behind them, opponents held up bright pink signs that simply read 'Vote No.'

Among the pro-equality demonstrators was Grace McBride, a 27-year-old nurse from St. Paul. She told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that she and her partner felt compelled to be there to watch history unfold.

She hopes to get married 'as soon as I can,' she said. If the bill passes in the Senate, it will take effect on August 1.

'I have thought about my wedding since I was a little girl,' she added.

GOING FOR 12
The state Senate will take up the bill on May 13. Democratic leaders said they are confident they have the votes to pass the measure there too. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has promised to sign the bill when it comes to his desk, making Minnesota the 12th state in the country to authorize same-sex marriage, after Delaware.

Richard Carlbom, executive director of Minnesotans United for All Families, said there has been 'a dramatic shift in attitude toward Gay marriage in the last decade because people understand that marriage, regardless of who you are, is about the commitment two people share. And they don't want to stand in the way any longer.'

'More and more people realize that same-sex couples marry for the same reasons as anyone else,' Carlbom added. 'They want to marry the person they love.'

A new Survey USA poll shows that 51% of Minnesotans favor marriage equality while 47% are opposed, with 2% unsure. Just over two months ago, in early February, only 42% favored legalizing same-sex marriage and 54% were opposed.

OPPONENTS DEMORALIZED
Even some Republicans, whose 'Don't Mess With Marriage' campaign failed to catch fire in the wake of voters' decisive rejection of an anti-equality constitutional amendment last November, said that marriage equality appears to be a done deal.

'Is it inevitable? I'd say probably,' said Republican Rep. Michael Beard. 'I mean, marriage is what it is, but they are redefining words and redefining meanings that have been in use for centuries because it is the cause of the week, the flavor of the month.'

Speaker Paul Thissen told reporters on May 6 that he had at least the 68 votes needed to pass the measure. His Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party has a majority of 73 seats in the House. In the end, four Republicans voted for the bill and two Democrats voted against it.

'My family knew firsthand that same sex-couples pay our taxes, we vote, we serve in the military, we take care of our kids and our elders, and we run businesses in Minnesota,' said the bill's sponsor, openly Lesbian Rep. Karen Clark. 'Same-sex couples should be treated fairly under the law, including the freedom to marry the person we love.'
