54 and counting - The Senate majority for marriage equality keeps growing

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Fifty-four U.S. Senators now support marriage equality - 52 Democrats and two Republicans.

South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson became the latest Democrat to endorse same-sex marriage, in a statement to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader on April 8.

"After lengthy consideration, my views have evolved sufficiently to support marriage equality legislation," he said. "This position doesn't require any religious denomination to alter any of its tenets - it simply forbids government from discrimination regarding who can marry whom."

His endorsement followed that of two Democratic colleagues on April 5: Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, and Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana.

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) said on April 5 that she personally supports marriage equality, but that most of her constituents do not.

"My state has a very strong constitutional amendment not only against Gay marriage but against Gay partnerships," she said. "So I'm looking at the people of Louisiana trying to represent their interests."

PRYOR IS A NO
Only one Senate Democrat has come out unambiguously against equality. After telling interviewers to "put me down in the undecided category" on April 5, Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas said on April 9 that he's against it.

"I am opposed to Gay marriage," Pryor announced in an e-mail to KSFM radio.

"In the interview with KFSM done on April 5, I also discussed whether Gay couples should receive benefits if they work for the federal government. On the benefits issue, I said to 'put me down in the undecided category.' By that I meant that, depending on what the U.S. Supreme Court decides, I will evaluate whether federal benefits should be available to Gay couples. Of course, I will consider the impact any extension of benefits would have on the federal budget."

The only Senate Democrat who has not spoken recently about marriage equality is West Virginia's Joe Manchin.

On the Republican side, Senators Mark Kirk of Illinois and Rob Portman of Ohio support equality.
