Willie Nelson endorses marriage equality

'Gay people should be just as miserable as the rest of us,' legendary singer says by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

In a lighthearted interview with Texas Monthly, legendary musician, tax resister, environmentalist, and legal pot advocate Willie Nelson has endorsed marriage equality.

Referring to Nelson's four marriages, the magazine, which published the interview online March 28, observed he'd 'grown into a reputation as something of an authority on marriage itself.'

'I've been there and back a few times,' Nelson told interviewer Andy Langer. 'It's not perfect, so why should we expect it to be perfect for everybody?'

'[Y]ou think everybody should be able to get married?' the interviewer asks.

'Absolutely,' Nelson replies. 'I never thought of marriage as something only for men and women. But I'd never marry a guy I didn't like.'

The interviewer than refers to 'the fight for civil rights in the '60s.'

'It's about human rights,' Nelson agrees.

'As humanity, we've come through so many problems from the beginning to here. I guess it finally had to come around to this. This is just another situation, another problem. We'll work it out and move on.'

'And what do you think they'll say when they look back on this?' the interviewer asks.

'We'll look back and say it was crazy that we ever even argued about this,' Nelson replies.

A LONGTIME ALLY
In addition to his other causes, Nelson has often spoken out in favor of LGBT rights, a stand that has also carried over into his music. In 2006 Nelson covered Ned Sublette's 'Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other,' which is, as its name suggests, a Gay-positive country song.

'I thought it was the funniest goddamn song I'd ever heard,' Nelson said. 'I had it on the bus for 20 years, and people would come in and I'd play it. When Brokeback Mountain come out, it just seemed like a good time to kick it out of the closet.'

Nelson later revealed that his release of the recording was inspired when David Anderson, his friend and tour manager of 30 years, came out of the closet.

'This song obviously has special meaning to me in more ways than one,' Anderson said. 'I want people to know more than anything - Gay, straight, whatever - just how cool Willie is and & his way of thinking, his tolerance, everything about him.'
