Murray, Cantwell, McDermott earn F ratings from NRA

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell of Washington state, along with veteran Rep. Jim McDermott of Seattle, have all earned a grade of F from the National Rifle Association. According to the NRA, each of them is a 'true enemy of gun owners' rights.'

The NRA, a fierce opponent of any and all firearms restrictions, released its latest report card on March 25.

As the for rest of Washington's Congressional delegation, three Republicans got A's - Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Doc Hastings, and Jaime Herrera Beutler. Rep. Dave Reichert got a B, one of the lower scores for House Republicans.

Newly elected Democratic Rep. Derek Kilmer also scored a B, and Denny Heck, another first-term Democrat, got a C-plus. Veteran Democrats Rick Larsen and Adam Smith both scored C-minus, and Democrat Suzan DelBene was not rated.

The NRA's A grades come with cash prizes. The group awarded $2,500 to Beutler and $2,000 apiece to McMorris, Rodgers, and Hastings.

UPSIDE-DOWN BELL CURVE
All six West Coast senators - all of them Democrats - were rated F by the NRA, as were 146 members of the House of Representatives. Just one congressional Republican, Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, earned an F from the NRA. In fact, only 30 members of the 435-member U.S. House of Representatives are not at the A or F end of the grading spectrum.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California is regarded as the leading congressional advocate of gun control. On November 27, 1978, as a San Francisco supervisor, she discovered the body of Mayor George Moscone, who had been shot to death along with Supervisor Harvey Milk by their political rival, Dan White, who had recently resigned as a supervisor.
