WTF, Walesa? - LGBT lawmakers respond to ex-presidents anti-Gay remarks

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Polands first openly Gay and Transgender lawmakers sat on the front bench of their partys parliamentary group as Polands legislature - the Sejm - opened March 6.

Robert Biedron, who is openly Gay, and Transgender Anna Grodzka are members of the leftist Palikot Movement. Party leader Janusz Palikot promoted them to the front bench - the place reserved for party leaders - in response to recent anti-Gay remarks made by former Polish President Lech Walesa.

SAYS GAYS MUST ADJUST
Walesa said in a TV interview on March 1 that Gays have no right to sit on the front benches in Parliament and, if represented at all, should sit in the back and even behind a wall.

They have to know that they are a minority and must adjust to smaller things. And not rise to the greatest heights, the greatest hours, the greatest provocations, spoiling things for the others and taking from the majority, Walesa told TVN during a discussion of Gay rights.

I don't agree to this and I will never agree to it. A minority should not impose itself on the majority, he added.

Walesa's harsh words even shocked his own son, who serves as a member of the European Parliament.

Gays, Lesbians, the homosexuals, have the right to have a representation and should be in Parliament, Jaroslaw Walesa told reporters.

NO APOLOGIES
A devout Catholic and for decades a staunch ally of the late Pope John Paul II, Walesa says he has nothing to apologize for in spite of furious criticism from almost all sectors of Polish politics.

I will not apologize to anyone, the Walesa said in a March 4 interview. All I said [was] that minorities, which I respect, should not have the right to impose their views on the majority. I think most of Poland is behind me.

Why does Lech want me to sit in the back row? Biedron asked. If we accept the rules proposed by Lech Walesa, then where would Blacks sit? They are also a minority. And what about the disabled?

From a human point of view [Walesas] language was appalling. It was the statement of a troglodyte, said Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Jerzy Wenderlich, a representative of the Democratic Left Alliance.

Now nobody in their right mind will invite Lech Walesa as a moral authority, knowing what he said, Wenderlich added.

Monika Olejnik, a leading television journalist, said Walesa disgraced the Nobel prize he won in 1983, three years after initiating anti-Communist strikes in the Gdansk shipyards.

NOT THE FIRST TIME
Some Poles said they were not surprised by Walesas words, however, because they are consistent with his previous statements.

At a political campaign rally in 2000, for example, he said, I believe those [Gay] people need medical treatment.

Imagine if all people were like that, he added. We wouldn't have any descendants.

I am surprised that only now we are noticing that Walesa is not in control of what he says and that he has views that are far from being politically correct, said Adam Bielan, a conservative Polish member of the European Parliament.
