RI governor supports marriage equality bill

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee says he wants his state's legislature to pass a marriage equality bill, and he has promised to veto any attempt to put the issue up for a public vote.

In a January 10 statement to reporters, Chafee said state lawmakers owe it to voters to make the decision themselves.

Equality opponents, including Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin, have suggested that voters should decide the marriage issue in a referendum.

Chafee, a vocal supporter of marriage equality, pulled the plug on that idea with his promise to veto it.

LAWMAKERS RESPONSIBLE
When asked by ABC-TV reporter Mark Curtis why he would veto a referendum, Chafee said lawmakers are elected to make decisions for the people they represent, and he feels that same-sex marriage is an issue they should decide.

For the first time, Senate President Teresa Paiva-Weed, previously an opponent of same-sex marriage, says she will let the marriage bill come up for a vote on the Senate floor, and House Speaker Gordon Fox expects a hearing on the bill as early as next week.

Chafee is a former Republican and son of the late John Chafee, a Republican who served as both governor and U.S. Senator. In 2007 the younger Chafee left the Republican Party, citing its rapid move to the right, and in 2008 he endorsed Barack Obama for the presidency.

As a U.S. Senator from 1999 to 2007, he was the only Republican in that chamber to support marriage equality. In 2010 he ran for Governor as an independent and was endorsed by HRC.

SIGNED CIVIL UNIONS BILL
In 2011, Chafee signed the Rhode Island civil unions bill, passed after marriage equality legislation stalled in committee. At the time, he admitted having reservations to signing it because it was imperfect and failed to give Gay and Lesbian couples the full marriage rights given to opposite-sex couples.

In May 2012, Chafee signed an executive order directing state agencies to recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages.
