Best of Music 2012 coming Dec. 21

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

Another year, another batch of albums and singles to lock in the time vault. While 2012 may not go down as one of the most successful years for artistic breakthroughs, it will culminate as being one of the strongest commercially in recent memory. Digital sales are up, way up - the numbers are possibly record-breaking. That said, Seattle Gay News will offer its yearly summary on December 21, revealing our selections for the year's best albums, singles, live performances, and hottest artists. (We'll also choose the year's biggest duds.)

SOUNDGARDEN SELLS OUT
Not only are both Soundgarden's hometown concerts (February 7-8, Paramount Theatre) sold out, but tickets for the group's entire 21-date tour are completely gone. The reunited Seattle band just released a new album, King Animal, whose leadoff track is 'Been Away Too Long.' A music video for the track is posted on YouTube. Even though there are currently no tickets available, visit www.stgpresents.org closer to the show dates for a possible last-minute release of tickets.

SWIFT ADDS SHEERAN
Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has been added as opening act for the Taylor Swift concert scheduled for the Tacoma Dome on August 31. Swift will co-host the Grammy nominations telecast, billed as the 'Countdown to Music's Biggest Night,' on December 5. The Nashville artist's new album Red has quickly become one of the year's top-selling recordings. Sheeran is a potential Best New Artist nominee, and I've met him - he's a sweetheart.

FAREWELL, COWPOKE
A reminder that the legendary Glen Campbell is set to perform November 27 at the Paramount Theatre. This is very likely to be the country singer's final tour - your last opportunity to hear 'Rhinestone Cowboy,' 'Southern Nights,' 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix,' 'Gentle on My Mind,' and 'Ghost on the Canvas' performed live by the icon himself. Visit www.stgpresents.org for ticket information.

IT'S KOOL, MAN
For you '70s and '80s peeps, Kool and the Gang will perform January 11 at Snoqualmie Casino Ballroom. Four remaining members from the original R&B hitmaking lineup will appear at the nearby casino, having recently toured with Van Halen. Tickets are on sale now at www.snocasino.com.

CHESNEY GOES TO CHURCH
The complete lineup for Kenny Chesney's huge concert next summer at CenturyLink Field (his third appearance in Seattle) is Chesney himself, Eric Church, the Eli Young Band, and Kacey Musgraves. Tickets priced between $39.15 and $231.00 go on sale December 7 at all Ticketmaster locations.

SUB POP'S SUPER YEAR
Finally, congratulations to our friends at Sub Pop Records for landing their second-ever platinum recording for The Postal Service's Give Up album! Featuring a young Ben Gibbard, the duo's 2003 electro-indie pop effort has crossed the million-seller mark - as of this writing, 1,067,087 copies have been sold worldwide. Sub Pop helped support the Washington United for Marriage campaign with a financial donation of $25,000.
