Minus The Bear saves their best for Seattle fans

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

MINUS THE BEAR
SHOWBOX AT THE MARKET
November 17

The Showbox Market welcomed back-to-back maximum capacity crowds last weekend, both camps filing in to catch a pair of highly touted local acts. The first was Ben Gibbard, playing a solo performance on Friday night outside of his usual Death Cab for Cutie commitments. The second was rock band Minus The Bear, who wrapped up a long national tour in their backyard on Saturday to a roaring packed house.

In August, the group performed an intimate concert at the Comet Tavern to benefit Music for Marriage Equality. Many, if not all, of the songs from that special appearance were placed on The Showbox's set list, too, and they only improved after three months of road travel. There wasn't a weak spot in Minus The Bear's performance - it was a tight and incredibly energetic display that really felt like a hometown celebration.

NEW ALBUM SPOTLIGHTED
'Steel and Blood' kicked things off, the first of about a half-dozen songs from the band's new album, Infinity Overhead. 'Lies and Eyes,' another track from the 2012 offering, followed, and then the five-piece resurrected a favorite from 2007's Planet of Ice, 'Throwin' Shapes,' that had concertgoers throughout the venue clapping their hands in unison as the stage was illuminated in cool blue lights.

The audience was well-behaved but enthusiastic with a lot of action on the packed main floor, from bodies moving to fist pumps to young men bouncing up and down persistently. During a melodramatic rendition of 'Into the Mirror,' the crowd swayed their hands in the air from side to side, and while the band jammed on 'My Time,' a bunch of large balloons were tossed out to play with.

'This is the last night of our tour,' said bearded lead singer Jake Snider, wearing jeans and black long-sleeve dress shirt. If the quintet was exhausted, they didn't drop any signs of it. In fact, they appeared jubilant and spirited during the entire set.

'Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse,' from the 10-year-old album Highly Refined Pirates, was a nice surprise that snuck itself into the show, while a newer number, 'Toska,' was highlighted by some grinding guitar work from Snider and Dave Knudson. Alex Rose also chimed in wonderfully on keyboards, primarily on 'My Time' and 'Lonely Gun.'

'GOOD JOB, WASHINGTON!'
A pounding delivery of 'Cold Company' ended the main set. After a quick break, in which the audience oddly shouted 'USA! USA! USA!' Minus The Bear returned for a three-song encore that included a sensational version of 'Pachuca Sunrise' and some post-election commentary.

'We're the first state to legalize marijuana!' declared Snider over thunderous cheers. 'And we're one of the first states to legalize Gay marriage!' which got another loud response. 'Good job, Washington!'

There's no immediate word on whether Minus The Bear will tour again next year to further promote Infinity Overhead, but for now, the band is resting here at home.
